Position Overview
The ideal candidate will deliver comprehensive writing assistance (both digital and in-person) to all students at North Island College. This role encompasses providing essential support for the Learning Commons Coordinator position, which includes collaborating with peer tutors and the Math Support faculty (2.5 hours per week).

The primary responsibility of the candidate will be to ensure adequate coverage in Writing Support (15 hours per week) to address student requirements while also guaranteeing accessible appointment times for students.

The successful candidate will offer writing assistance to students at the Comox Valley and Campbell River campuses. This role also involves providing support for the Learning Commons Coordinator position.

This position is accountable for ensuring sufficient coverage to meet student needs, as well as maintaining accessibility for students.

Additionally, the role includes promoting available services through in-class presentations and other interactions with students and faculty.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide online, one-on-one or small group writing assistance to students;
  • Assist students in comprehending and interpreting assignment guidelines and expectations;
  • Utilize critical reading skills to efficiently identify and differentiate between higher and lower order concerns in various academic writing genres;
  • Balance the expressed needs of learners, assignment criteria, and the tutor's insights into the writer's learning requirements;
  • Offer tutoring input that is practical for learners to implement;
  • Research, select, and provide relevant resources from online academic writing platforms when necessary;
  • Responsible for collecting timesheets from peer tutors, verifying and signing them, and forwarding them to the supervisor for processing;
  • Coordinate and oversee math support;
  • Respond to diverse student writing, including accented nonstandard English and basic writing, as well as advanced academic writing;
  • Assess when a referral is necessary (when a request exceeds one's expertise) and effectively direct learners to suitable resources;
  • Adhere to ethical standards and practices that promote academic integrity and learner independence;
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries in the tutor role;
  • Identify the type of assistance students require and customize tutoring to meet their skill needs.
Required Education & Experience
  • Master's degree in English or equivalent language-based training;
  • Experience providing formative feedback on student writing is essential;
  • A BC teaching certificate or Provincial Instructors diploma is highly desirable.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, along with time management, interpersonal, and organizational skills;
  • Base tutoring approaches on contemporary writing center theories and best practices;
  • Demonstrate the ability to address both higher order and lower order concerns in academic writing;
  • Effectively engage with a wide range of student writing, from foundational to advanced levels;
  • Comfortably work with accented nonstandard English writing, basic writing, and upper-level academic writing;
  • Adapt tutoring strategies to meet diverse learner needs;
  • Model and demonstrate effective writing techniques;
  • Possess high-level critical reading and response skills;
  • Experience supporting students from various social and cultural backgrounds;
  • Exhibit flexibility and creativity in addressing student needs;
  • Work independently and online with a diverse and widely-dispersed team;
  • Proficiently use standard computer and internet technologies;
  • Ability to discuss and promote writing support programs to students and faculty.
