Position Overview
The ideal candidate will deliver comprehensive writing assistance (both digital and in-person) to all students at North Island College. This role will also involve providing support for the Learning Commons Coordinator position, which includes collaboration with peer tutors and Math Support faculty (2.5 hours per week).

The primary responsibility of this position is to ensure adequate coverage in Writing Support (15 hours per week) to address student requirements while maintaining accessibility for appointment scheduling.

The successful candidate will offer writing assistance to students at various campuses. This role encompasses responsibilities related to the Learning Commons Coordinator position.

It is essential to ensure that there is sufficient coverage to meet student demands and to provide accessible appointment times.

This position will also involve promoting available services through classroom visits and other interactions with students and faculty.

Responsibilities
  • Provide online, one-on-one, or small group writing assistance to students;
  • Assist students in comprehending and interpreting assignment guidelines and expectations;
  • Utilize critical reading skills to effectively identify and differentiate between higher and lower order concerns in academic writing;
  • Balance the expressed needs of learners with assignment criteria and the tutor's insights into the writer's learning requirements;
  • Deliver tutoring feedback that is actionable for learners;
  • Research, select, and provide relevant resources from online academic writing platforms when necessary;
  • Manage time sheets from peer tutors, ensuring accuracy and forwarding them for processing;
  • Coordinate and oversee math support services;
  • Respond to a diverse range of student writing, including nonstandard English and foundational writing, as well as advanced academic writing;
  • Recognize when referrals are necessary and effectively guide learners to appropriate resources;
  • Uphold ethical standards that promote academic integrity and learner independence;
  • Maintain clear boundaries in the tutoring role;
  • Identify the specific assistance students require and tailor tutoring to their needs.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree in English or equivalent language-focused training;
  • Experience in providing constructive feedback on student writing;
  • BC teaching certificate or Provincial Instructors diploma is highly desirable.
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, along with time management and organizational abilities;
  • Base tutoring approaches on contemporary writing center theories and best practices;
  • Demonstrate the ability to address both higher and lower order concerns in academic writing;
  • Effectively engage with a wide variety of student writing across foundational and advanced levels;
  • Adapt tutoring strategies to meet diverse learner needs;
  • Model effective writing techniques;
  • Possess high-level critical reading and response capabilities;
  • Experience supporting students from various social and cultural backgrounds;
  • Exhibit flexibility and creativity in addressing student needs;
  • Work independently and collaboratively with a diverse team;
  • Proficiently use standard computer and internet technologies;
  • Ability to discuss and advocate for writing support programs to students and faculty.
