ROLE OVERVIEW

The International Student Advisor plays a crucial role in supporting international students as they navigate their educational journey in Canada. This position requires a dedicated professional who can address a variety of student needs and provide essential resources.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Initial Contact: Serve as the primary resource for international students, offering guidance on cultural adaptation, visa processes, health services, and insurance matters.
  2. Referral Services: Direct students to appropriate university and external resources as needed.
  3. Emergency Response: Act promptly in emergencies involving students, including incidents of crime, health crises, and other urgent situations.
  4. Communication Management: Oversee virtual communication platforms and provide front desk assistance.
  5. Student Engagement: Communicate with students, families, and agents before their arrival; welcome new students and facilitate introductions to host families.
  6. Promotional Activities: Assist in recruitment efforts, educational fairs, and other marketing initiatives.
  7. Housing Assistance: Support students in finding suitable on-campus and off-campus accommodation.
  8. Homestay Coordination: Evaluate and approve homestay families, ensuring a good match between students and hosts.
  9. Information Dissemination: Create and distribute comprehensive information packages for students.
  10. Liaison Services: Facilitate communication between international students, their families, and various stakeholders, including government and community organizations.
  11. Translation Services: Provide translation and interpretation support for students and their families, including marketing materials.
  12. Academic Support: Assist students with course registration and scheduling.
  13. Progress Monitoring: Track student progress and address any concerns that arise.
  14. Event Organization: Plan and conduct workshops, informational sessions, and social events, including orientation and cultural activities.
  15. Immigration Support: Offer regular workshops and information sessions related to immigration policies and procedures.
  16. Policy Interpretation: Explain Canada's immigration regulations and provide tailored advice regarding study and work permits.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree or equivalent post-secondary education.
  • Membership in good standing with the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants as a Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA).

EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of four years of relevant experience, including at least two years in a multicultural, client-focused environment and two years in a foreign country where the primary language is spoken.
  • Familiarity with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) regulations regarding international students.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Fluency in a foreign language (Hindi or Punjabi) is preferred.
  • Exceptional cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Understanding of the Canadian post-secondary education landscape.
  • Knowledge of cultural adjustment challenges.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and digital communication platforms.
  • Ability to perform accurate electronic data entry.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective interaction with students and the public.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Capability to operate relevant equipment.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
  • Engagement with students, families, and stakeholders in both office and public settings.
  • Potential for local and international travel.
