Position Title: Mental Health Liaison Nurse - Nurse III

Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate degree in Psychiatric Nursing preferred (BScMH, BScPN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with relevant experience will be considered.
  • Active practicing licensure with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurse of Manitoba.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant clinical experience in mental health within the past five (5) years.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Training as per Prairie Mountain Health Policy PPG-00002 CPR Training.
  • Current certifications in:
    • ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training)
    • NVCI (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention)
    • Co-Occurring Disorder training
  • Province of Manitoba Class 5 Drivers Licence or equivalent and access to a personal vehicle for service provision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and other Information Technology applications.
  • Evidence of professional development and active participation in professional associations.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and effective teaching abilities for individuals and groups.
  • Competence in working with specific patient populations, including crisis intervention principles and dialectical behavior therapy.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of trauma-informed care and recovery-oriented mental health philosophy.
  • Excellent counseling and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to safely and effectively intervene with aggressive or self-destructive individuals.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective teaching skills to support and educate clients, families, and colleagues in mental health care.
  • Ability to collaborate and lead within a team to provide mental health services.
  • Capacity to practice independently and as part of an interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Knowledge and competence in demonstrating clinical nursing skills in accordance with approved standards.
  • Ability to make informed decisions regarding nursing care.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, organizational, interpersonal, critical thinking, and creative decision-making skills.
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and clients.
  • Commitment to confidentiality and respect for privacy.

Responsibilities:

Overview:

Assessment, Consultation & Triage of Complex Mental Health Presentations:

  • Primary responsibility to the Emergency Department.
  • Provide assessment and consultation to patients on inpatient units upon physician referral.
  • Conduct initial assessments for patients presenting to the Emergency Department with mental health concerns or substance abuse issues.
  • Assist in triaging individuals in the emergency room for mental health issues, assessing risk, and prioritizing interventions.
  • Collaborate with the Emergency Department healthcare team to develop treatment, discharge, and transfer plans.
  • Support recovery-oriented practices and conduct follow-up calls to assess intervention effectiveness.
  • Process referrals to community resources in collaboration with the Emergency Department.
  • Obtain collateral information from community service providers and family members.
  • Act as a resource within the Emergency Department, providing support to patients and families in crisis.
  • Demonstrate competency in mental health crisis intervention and psychosocial assessment.
  • Maintain knowledge of psychopharmacology and cultural diversity in patient populations.
  • Liaise with community and hospital services to advocate for patients and families.
  • Support behavioral management of patients in the Emergency Department.
  • Participate in the development of community plans for clients frequently accessing emergency services.
  • Provide telephone or telehealth consultations for mental health presentations to regional emergency departments.
  • Support families of critically ill or deceased patients and link them with community resources.
  • Document and report findings to the Emergency Department team, including mental health assessments and recommendations.

Administrative Requirements and Professional Development:

  • Participate in the development of mental health policies and guidelines for the emergency department.
  • Engage in evidence-informed professional development and demonstrate critical thinking in policy implementation.
  • Act as a preceptor for students in the clinical environment.
  • Maintain regular communication with management and submit reports as required.
  • Participate in Emergency Department meetings as appropriate.
  • Foster a collaborative interdisciplinary environment that supports quality services and staff empowerment.
  • Possess sound knowledge of relevant mental health legislation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
