Position: Mental Health Liaison Nurse - Nurse III
Qualifications:
- Baccalaureate degree in Psychiatric Nursing preferred (BScMH, BScPN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with relevant experience will be considered.
- Active practicing licensure with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurse of Manitoba.
- A minimum of three (3) years of relevant clinical experience in mental health within the past five (5) years.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Training as per Prairie Mountain Health Policy PPG-00002 CPR Training.
- Current certifications in:
- ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training)
- NVCI (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention)
- Co-Occurring Disorder training
- Province of Manitoba Class 5 Drivers Licence or equivalent and access to a personal vehicle for service provision.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and other relevant IT applications.
- Evidence of professional development and active participation in professional associations.
- Knowledge of adult learning principles and effective teaching skills for individuals and groups.
- Competence in working with specific patient populations, including crisis intervention principles and dialectical behavior therapy.
- Understanding of trauma-informed care and recovery-oriented mental health philosophy.
- Strong counselling and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to safely intervene with aggressive or self-destructive individuals.

Responsibilities:
Overview:
The Mental Health Liaison Nurse is primarily responsible for:
- Assessment, consultation, and triage of complex mental health presentations, with a focus on the Emergency Department.
- Conducting initial assessments for patients presenting with mental health concerns or substance abuse in the Emergency Department.
- Collaborating with the healthcare team to develop treatment, discharge, and transfer plans.
- Implementing recovery-oriented practices and conducting follow-up calls to assess intervention effectiveness.
- Processing referrals to community resources and obtaining collateral information from various sources.
- Providing support to patients and families during stressful situations and crises.
- Demonstrating competency in mental health crisis intervention and psychosocial assessment.
- Liaising with community and hospital services to advocate for patients and families.
- Participating in the development of mental health policies and guidelines.
- Maintaining regular communication with management and participating in relevant meetings.
This role requires a commitment to fostering a collaborative interdisciplinary environment that supports quality services and staff empowerment.
