Regulatory Investigator

Position Overview: The Regulatory Investigator serves as a specialist in conducting thorough and timely investigations, either independently or collaboratively, in accordance with the provisions of The Law Society Act. This role encompasses a broad spectrum of issues, including (i) the professional conduct of Licensees, (ii) the unauthorized provision of legal services by non-Licensees, and (iii) the assessment of the good character of Licensee applicants.
Key Responsibilities:
- Developing disposition proposals aligned with the Law Society's public interest mandate, legislation, by-laws, and policies.
- Coordinating with Litigation Services staff when investigation files do not reach settlement or are subject to disciplinary action, including providing testimony in regulatory and court proceedings.
Qualifications:
- A college diploma or university degree in Business or Law, or equivalent legal and/or accounting training and/or investigative experience.
- A minimum of five (5) years of independent file management experience in a law office or accounting environment.
- Preferred investigation experience from a law enforcement, regulatory, or government context.
- Solid understanding of the Law Society's mandate, services, legislation, and policies, or a willingness to learn.
- Trauma-informed knowledge is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with current trends and developments in investigative techniques and their practical applications.
- Experience in investigating allegations of sexual misconduct is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of Law Society accounting and bookkeeping practices.
- Understanding of various dispute resolution techniques and their appropriate application.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for facilitating resolution and disposition of complaints.
Skills:
- Concise and well-organized writing skills for preparing a comprehensive range of investigative documents and memoranda.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including word processing software, data processing, accounting system software, and internet search capabilities.
- Specific familiarity with Microsoft One Drive, SharePoint, and Adobe Pro is a definite asset.
- A broad understanding of technology applications, preferably in a regulatory or legal environment.
Work Environment: The incumbent will primarily work from a home office and may be required to attend various locations as needed. Occasional overnight travel may be necessary for investigations.
Client and Customer Service: Responsibilities include identifying risks, conducting ongoing risk analysis, establishing practice controls, and monitoring Licensees facing charges in the criminal justice system or other proceedings.
Policy and Regulatory Compliance: The Investigator will follow procedural and administrative requirements regarding searches and seizures, including the handling, cataloguing, security, and control of evidence gathered during investigations.
Performance Goals: The role involves managing a personal caseload and collaborating with Investigation Services colleagues to establish, monitor, and continuously improve processes and case management performance targets.
Policy Development: The Investigator will identify and advise on the need for policy development or changes based on legal issues encountered during investigations and participate in the development of policies and processes as assigned.
Relationship Building: Developing and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with law enforcement, government agencies, and various levels of the Federal and Provincial Judicial systems, as well as financial institutions, is essential for facilitating information exchange.
