Position Overview:

The Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto is renowned for its commitment to legal education and research. We are seeking a Research Associate for a one-year term as part of the Junior Indigenous Scholars Program. This role is designed for individuals aspiring to develop their academic careers in law, particularly those focused on Indigenous legal issues.

Opportunity Details:

The selected candidate will engage in significant research concerning Indigenous peoples' law, contributing to the academic community under the mentorship of a distinguished faculty member. This position includes access to essential resources and opportunities to present research findings to peers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-depth research on legal matters affecting Indigenous communities and produce a scholarly article aimed for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Participate actively in the intellectual environment of the Faculty, including workshops, seminars, and conferences.
  • Assist in teaching responsibilities and potentially lead a class focused on Indigenous Law.

Qualifications:

Educational Background:

  • A Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) is required; an LL.M. is advantageous.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated research experience in Indigenous legal issues through academic projects or thesis work.
  • A strong academic record indicative of potential as a legal scholar.
  • Interest and background in Indigenous cultures and community engagement are preferred.

Skills:

  • Exceptional analytical, writing, and research capabilities.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

Note: This is a one-year term position.
