About the Opportunity

The University of Toronto's Faculty of Law is seeking a highly motivated and organized Research Associate to provide legal research and advocacy support to the David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights. This is a two-year term position that will play a vital role in articulating Canada's constitutional vision to the broader world.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth research on constitutional rights issues, particularly in the areas of constitutional litigation, positive rights under the Charter, and experiential education;
  • Research, draft, and edit policy papers, advocacy materials, legal submissions, and reports on constitutional rights issues;
  • Develop and implement advocacy strategies to promote constitutional rights;
  • Assist with the research, development, and supervision of Asper Centre clinic projects;
  • Liaise with various stakeholders, including community partners and civil society networks;

Qualifications

  • Must possess an LLB or JD (LLM would be considered an asset);
  • Minimum two years' work experience directly related to constitutional rights research and advocacy, including legislative advocacy;
  • Experience in constitutional rights advocacy and litigation (experience clerking with an appellate court would be considered an asset);

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong legal research skills and excellent writing skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in English;
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines;
  • Ability to work under pressure and demonstrate excellent judgement, problem-solving skills, and initiative;
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment;
