Position Overview:

The Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto is renowned for its excellence in legal education and research. As part of our commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion, we are offering a unique opportunity for a Research Associate under the Junior Indigenous Scholars Program.

About the Program:

This initiative is designed to support emerging legal scholars who are focused on Indigenous issues. The selected candidate will engage in research, writing, and teaching, while receiving mentorship from esteemed faculty members, including Professor John Borrows, a leading authority in Indigenous Law.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-depth research on Indigenous peoples' law or relevant state law, culminating in the authorship of an original scholarly work aimed at publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Actively participate in the academic community through faculty workshops, seminars, and conferences.
  • Assist in teaching responsibilities or lead a class within an Indigenous Law course.

Qualifications:

Educational Background:

  • Applicants must hold an LL.B. or J.D. degree; an LLM degree is considered advantageous.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated research experience in Indigenous matters, supported by academic projects or theses.
  • A strong academic record indicating potential for a successful career as a legal scholar.
  • Genuine interest in Indigenous cultures and issues, with experience in community engagement viewed as beneficial.
  • A commitment to pursuing an academic career in law.

  • Outstanding research, writing, and analytical capabilities.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
