Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the Department Manager, the Community Mental Health Worker plays a vital role in providing housing and support services that empower clients to achieve and sustain independent living.
Work Schedule:
We are seeking casual Community Mental Health Workers available for day, afternoon, and night shifts.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate the execution of programs, including leisure activities, cooking, and housekeeping, by engaging clients in daily living skills.
- Deliver community-based psycho-social rehabilitation services by assisting clients in accessing and developing connections to community programs and resources.
- Instruct and exemplify life skills and strategies essential for self-care, independent living, and interaction with external social services.
- Utilize effective communication strategies, including role modeling, to build collaborative relationships with clients.
- Provide necessary support and information to help clients enhance self-esteem and develop decision-making capabilities through various techniques.
- Assist clients in identifying and accessing both formal and informal community supports, including leisure, vocational, and educational services.
- Monitor and document clients' physical and mental health status, taking appropriate actions as needed.
- Advocate for clients to uphold their rights and dignity.
- Collaborate professionally with clients, colleagues, supervisors, other agencies, and family members.
- Develop personalized life skills programs with clients, involving family, friends, and community resources when appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with the QWIK process and complete administrative tasks within designated timeframes.
- Conduct formal and informal assessments to create individualized plans that identify clients' interests and needs.
- Safely administer medications in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Oversee the implementation of maintenance, housekeeping, and cooking tasks within the program.
- Identify and address health and safety concerns as they arise.
- Perform assigned administrative duties and maintain required records.
- Fulfill additional responsibilities as necessary.
- May be tasked with directing students and volunteers.
- Carry out other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Diploma in Community Social Service or a relevant combination of education, training, and experience.
- Minimum of two years of recent, related experience.
- Ability to provide/obtain required certifications upon hire, including First Aid + CPR, WHMIS, and FoodSafe, along with Ministry of Justice Criminal Record Clearance, TB Clearance, and Immunization Records, including Covid-19 Vaccination Status.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Understanding of housing issues and local community resources.
- Comprehensive knowledge of harm reduction approaches and their application in community settings.
- Proven crisis de-escalation skills in a team environment.
- Experience working with marginalized individuals at risk of homelessness.
- Ability to support individuals dealing with substance misuse and untreated mental health issues.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles.
- Knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation practices and program policies.
- Proficiency in relevant software applications.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Physical capability to perform the duties of the position.
- Adept at observing and recognizing changes in clients' conditions.
- Experience facilitating group activities.
- Basic understanding of the criminal justice system.
