Position Summary

Reporting to the Edmonton Site Leader, the Plant Engineer plays a crucial role in delivering engineering and project management expertise for Mechanical and Chemical initiatives aimed at ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the Edmonton Chemical Plant. This role encompasses the entire project lifecycle, from initial scoping and planning through execution, monitoring, and project closure. The Plant Engineer collaborates closely with Maintenance and Operations teams to ensure successful project outcomes while focusing on process and production engineering.

Key Responsibilities

Environmental, Health, and Safety

  • Exhibit leadership and actively contribute to fostering a robust safety culture within the facility by engaging in EHS programs and initiatives.

Technical Expertise and Problem Solving

  • Oversee the planning, organization, cost management, and execution of approved projects, which may involve acquiring new mechanical equipment, upgrading existing systems, and implementing changes through the Management of Change (MOC) process.
  • Provide technical assistance to Maintenance and Operations teams during the installation of projects, which may occur during routine operations or scheduled plant turnarounds.
  • Develop cost estimates for projects to be included in capital, maintenance, and turnaround budgets.
  • Create equipment fabrication specifications that adhere to regulatory codes and internal company standards.
  • Offer engineering support to various site groups as needed.
  • Utilize recognized project management principles to effectively develop and execute assigned projects.

Communication, Coordination, and Reporting

  • Collaborate effectively with the Plant Management team, Engineering department, Regional Engineering, and the company's engineering center of excellence to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Keep plant and equipment information current as necessary.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with all plant personnel involved in engineering functions.
  • Prepare regular project updates and monthly reports detailing study results, proposals, and project status.
  • Lead efforts to resolve conflicts that may arise during project execution, ensuring stakeholder requirements are met while keeping projects on schedule.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for this role.

Self and Staff Development

  • Continuously familiarize oneself with all relevant procedures, equipment, and processes through proactive learning. Identify areas for personal development and collaborate with supervisors to pursue training opportunities.
  • Enhance technical skills in areas such as process piping, pumps, vessels, heat exchangers, and related mechanical systems, including the development of preliminary isometric drawings. Maintain knowledge of applicable codes and standards.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution; APEGA EIT eligibility or registration preferred.
  • Approximately 10 years of experience in plant engineering within the chemical or related industries, including at least 2 years in project engineering roles.
  • Project Management certifications are advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Proficient in various software applications, including databases, spreadsheets, word processing, project management tools, and technical software, with required proficiency in AutoCAD-2D.
  • Self-driven and capable of working independently.
  • Experience in mechanical design projects related to utility systems, material handling, structural, and process piping.
  • Familiarity with SAP is a significant asset.

Position Scope and Contribution

  • The incumbent will typically manage projects valued up to $500,000, with some reaching $1 million. They may also assist senior engineers on larger projects as needed, taking responsibility for execution and cost control. The Edmonton plant operates continuously throughout the year.

Additional Requirements

  • Physical: Ability to wear full and half-face respirators; capable of walking, sitting, climbing, lifting, balancing, kneeling, reaching, handling, and seeing. Requires visual acuity to distinguish colors.
  • Aptitudes: Ability to comprehend instructions and perform arithmetic operations accurately. Must possess good eye-hand coordination and be proficient in reading, writing, and communicating in English.
  • Temperaments: Must be responsible, able to perform under stress, adapt to precise situations, and manage changing duties while maintaining professionalism.
  • Fit for Duty report, valid Class 5 driver's license, and clear criminal background check are required.
