Position OverviewReporting to the Site Leader, the Chemical Plant Engineering Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering engineering and project management expertise for Mechanical and Chemical initiatives that enhance the operational safety of our facilities. This role encompasses the entire project lifecycle, from initial scoping and planning through execution, monitoring, and finalization. Collaboration with Maintenance and Operations teams is essential to ensure the successful delivery of capital projects. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in process and production engineering, complemented by a focus on continuous improvement and general plant engineering practices.
Key ResponsibilitiesEnvironmental, Health and Safety
- Actively promote and contribute to a robust safety culture within the facility by engaging in EHS programs and initiatives.
Technical Proficiency and Problem Solving
- Oversee the planning, organization, cost management, and execution of approved engineering projects, including the procurement and installation of mechanical equipment.
- Provide technical guidance to Maintenance and Operations teams during project implementation, ensuring seamless integration during routine operations and plant outages.
- Develop cost estimates for projects to be incorporated into capital and maintenance budgets.
- Create fabrication specifications for equipment that adhere to regulatory standards and internal guidelines.
- Offer engineering support across various site departments.
- Ensure that all recommendations and calculations are accurate, with oversight from senior engineers as necessary.
- Apply recognized project management principles throughout the project lifecycle.
Communication, Coordination, and Reporting
- Collaborate effectively with Plant Management, Engineering, and external contractors to ensure project success.
- Maintain updated records of plant and equipment information as needed.
- Foster ongoing communication with all personnel involved in engineering functions.
- Prepare and present regular project updates and reports on progress and outcomes.
- Lead efforts to resolve any conflicts that arise during project execution, ensuring stakeholder satisfaction while keeping projects on schedule.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for this role.
Professional Development
- Continuously enhance knowledge of procedures, equipment, and processes through self-directed learning and training initiatives.
- Broaden technical expertise in areas such as process piping, pumps, vessels, and heat exchangers, while maintaining familiarity with relevant codes and standards.
Productivity and Flexibility
- Manage multiple assignments and studies of varying scope, ensuring timely progress on all tasks, including procurement and cost control.
- Collaborate closely with vendors and consultants to facilitate effective project execution.
- Support Continuous Improvement initiatives through teamwork and the application of quality management principles.
Other Considerations
- Adhere to established departmental processes and internal controls, identifying any deficiencies for management attention.
- Provide assistance during plant outages or turnarounds as needed, which may involve supervisory responsibilities during non-standard hours.
- Serve as a site contact for external contractors, ensuring compliance with company protocols.
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution; APEGA EIT eligibility or registration preferred.
- Approximately 10 years of experience in plant engineering within the chemical industry, including at least 2 years in project engineering roles.
- Project Management certifications are advantageous but not mandatory.
- Proficiency in various software applications, including AutoCAD-2D, databases, and project management tools.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
- Experience in mechanical design projects related to utility systems and process piping.
- Familiarity with engineering specifications and SAP is a plus.
Position Scope/Contribution:
- The role typically involves leading projects with budgets up to $500,000, with some larger projects reaching $1 million. Collaboration with senior engineers on larger initiatives may also be required.
Additional Requirements:
- Physical requirements include the ability to wear respiratory protection and perform various physical tasks.
- Must possess strong comprehension and communication skills in English.
- Ability to perform under pressure and adapt to changing responsibilities while maintaining professionalism.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License and a clear criminal background check are required.
