Position Overview

Reporting to the Site Leader, the Process Engineering Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering engineering and project management expertise for Mechanical and Chemical initiatives aimed at ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our facilities. This role encompasses the full lifecycle of capital projects, from initial scoping and planning through execution, monitoring, and finalization. Collaboration with Maintenance and Operations teams is essential for the successful delivery of these projects, which focus on process optimization and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Environmental, Health and Safety

  • Exhibit leadership and foster a positive safety culture by actively engaging in EHS programs and initiatives.

Technical Expertise and Problem Solving

  • Oversee the planning, organization, budgeting, and execution of approved projects, including the procurement of new mechanical systems and modifications to existing equipment.
  • Provide technical guidance to Maintenance and Operations teams during project installations, which may occur during routine operations or scheduled outages.
  • Develop cost estimates for projects to be incorporated into capital and maintenance budgets.
  • Create equipment fabrication specifications that adhere to regulatory codes and internal standards.
  • Offer engineering support to various site teams as needed.
  • Utilize industry-standard project management principles to ensure effective project execution.

Communication and Coordination

  • Collaborate effectively with the Plant Management team, Engineering department, and external contractors to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Maintain up-to-date plant and equipment documentation.
  • Prepare regular reports detailing project progress, proposals, and ongoing studies.
  • Facilitate conflict resolution among project stakeholders to maintain project timelines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for this role.

Self-Development

  • Continuously enhance knowledge of procedures, equipment, and processes through self-initiated learning and training.
  • Expand technical skills in areas such as process piping, pumps, vessels, and heat exchangers, including the ability to create preliminary isometric drawings.
Additional Responsibilities

Productivity and Flexibility

  • Manage multiple assignments and studies of varying complexity and priority, ensuring timely progress across all projects.
  • Collaborate with vendors and consultants to ensure effective project execution.
  • Support Continuous Improvement initiatives through teamwork and the application of Quality Planning principles.

Other Considerations

  • Adhere to established departmental processes and identify any internal control deficiencies.
  • Assist during plant outages or turnarounds as needed, potentially taking on supervisory roles during non-standard hours.
  • Act as a site contact for external contractors, ensuring compliance with company policies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution; APEGA EIT eligibility or registration preferred.
  • 5 to 8 years of experience in plant engineering within the chemical or related industries, including at least 2 years in project engineering.
  • Project Management certifications are advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Proficiency in various software applications, including AutoCAD-2D, databases, and project management tools.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
  • Experience in mechanical design projects related to utility systems and process piping.
  • Familiarity with engineering specifications and SAP is a plus.

Position Scope and Contribution:

  • Lead projects with budgets up to $500,000, and assist senior engineers on larger initiatives as needed.
  • Responsible for project execution and cost management, requiring collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Engage in safety and plant assignments as required, supporting the operational needs of the facility.

  • Physical ability to wear respiratory protection and perform various physical tasks.
  • Strong aptitude for understanding instructions and performing precise tasks under pressure.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver's License and clear background check.
