Position SummaryReporting to the Site Leader, the Plant Engineer plays a pivotal role in delivering engineering and project management expertise for Mechanical and Chemical initiatives aimed at ensuring the ongoing safe operation of our chemical facility. This role encompasses the entire project lifecycle, from initial scoping and planning through execution, monitoring, and project closure. The Plant Engineer collaborates closely with Maintenance and Operations teams to ensure successful project outcomes, with a strong emphasis on process and production engineering, as well as continuous improvement.
Key ResponsibilitiesEnvironmental, Health, and Safety
- Exhibit leadership and actively contribute to fostering a positive safety culture within the facility through participation in EHS programs.
Technical Expertise and Problem Solving
- Oversee the planning, organization, cost management, and execution of approved projects, which may involve acquiring new mechanical equipment, upgrading existing systems, and implementing changes via the Management of Change (MOC) protocol.
- Provide technical assistance to Maintenance and Operations teams during the installation phases of assigned projects, including during routine operations and scheduled outages.
- Develop cost estimates for projects to be incorporated into capital, maintenance, and turnaround budgets.
- Create equipment fabrication specifications that adhere to regulatory codes and internal company standards.
- Offer engineering support to various teams on-site.
- Utilize recognized project management principles to effectively develop and execute assigned projects.
Communication, Coordination, and Reporting
- Collaborate effectively with all members of the Plant Management team, Engineering department, and regional engineering resources, maintaining open communication with all stakeholders involved in project execution.
- Ensure that plant and equipment information is accurately updated as necessary.
- Maintain ongoing communication with Plant personnel who share responsibilities in engineering-related areas.
- Prepare regular reports detailing project progress, proposals, and the status of ongoing work.
- Lead or assist in resolving conflicts that may arise during project execution, ensuring stakeholder requirements are met while keeping projects on schedule.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for this role.
Self and Staff Development
- Continuously familiarize oneself with all procedures, equipment, and processes, identifying areas for personal development and collaborating with supervisors to pursue necessary training.
- Enhance technical skills in areas such as process piping, pumps, vessels, heat exchangers, and related mechanical systems, while also developing preliminary isometric drawings.
- Maintain knowledge of relevant codes and standards, including ABSA, CSA B51, ASME Code Sections I, VIII, IX, B31.1, and B31.3.
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution; APEGA EIT eligibility or registration preferred.
- Approximately 10 years of experience in plant engineering within the chemical or related sectors, including at least 2 years in project engineering roles.
- Project Management certifications are advantageous but not mandatory.
- Proficiency in various software applications, including databases, spreadsheets, word processing, project management tools, and technical software, with a required proficiency in AutoCAD-2D.
- Self-driven and capable of working independently.
- Experience in mechanical design projects related to utility systems, material handling, structural, and process piping.
- Familiarity with SAP is a definite plus.
Position Scope and Contribution
- The incumbent will typically lead projects valued up to $500,000, with some projects reaching up to $1 million. They may also assist senior engineers on larger projects as needed, being responsible for execution and cost management. The role requires frequent interaction with both internal and external contacts, as the facility operates continuously throughout the year.

- Physical: Ability to wear respiratory protection and perform various physical activities, including walking, climbing, and lifting.
- Aptitudes: Strong comprehension of instructions and principles, along with the ability to perform arithmetic operations accurately.
- Temperaments: Capacity to handle responsibilities under pressure, adapt to changing duties, and maintain professionalism in challenging situations.
- Must be fit for duty and possess a valid driver's license.
