Our Canadian team focused on Construction and Energy Transition is seeking a skilled Underwriter to join our ranks.
Leveraging your extensive underwriting knowledge, you will develop customized solutions for both existing and prospective clients, collaborating with industry specialists who possess an average of over 15 years of experience in construction risk management. You will benefit from the expertise of seasoned risk engineers who stay updated on the latest industry advancements, as well as actuaries who assist in risk quantification and pricing. You will be part of a well-established team of Underwriters specializing in Construction and Energy.
This position entails significant interaction with clients, brokers, and internal stakeholders. The ideal candidate will possess a robust background in technical underwriting, particularly in Construction and Energy risk assessment. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, along with a collaborative mindset, are essential for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities
Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Crafting and structuring customized solutions in line with underwriting guidelines and policies to secure new business and maintain existing client relationships.
- Evaluating submissions, terms and conditions, loss history, and conducting thorough research to assess the risk level for each account based on company standards and granted underwriting authority.
- Collaborating with various internal divisions, including Actuarial, Claims, Reinsurance, Accounting, Marketing, and Risk Engineering, to support our business objectives.
- Making informed decisions regarding risk acceptance or rejection, calculating rates and premiums using approved models, and modifying policy wording as necessary.
- Engaging in marketing efforts to secure new and renewal business while identifying cross-selling opportunities across all lines of business.
- Mentoring and developing the skills of less experienced team members.
- Working collaboratively with your team members.
- Leading and participating in special projects as assigned by management.
In this role, you will report to the Head of Construction and Energy at AXA XL.
Required Skills and Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who possess the following skills:
- Extensive experience in Construction Property (Builders Risk) and Operational Energy (Renewables, Power, etc.) underwriting.
- Ability to work independently while being an open-minded team player, willing to listen and understand unique situations that require innovative solutions.
- Strong interaction skills with insured clients and brokers, effectively promoting our products.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for collaboration with internal teams and external brokers.
- Strong organizational, time-management, and multitasking abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Bilingual skills (English/French) are an asset.
- Knowledge of Primary Casualty, including Wrap-Ups and Excess and Umbrella liability, is a plus.
- A Bachelor's Degree is required, with advanced education or professional designations such as FCIP or CRIS preferred.
- Willingness to travel as necessary within Canada and the USA.
