About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced medical professional to fill the role of Hospitalist Department Head at Nova Scotia Health and IWK Health. Reporting to the Zone Medical Executive Director, this individual will provide strategic and operational planning and service leadership, collaborating with administrative Department leaders.

The successful candidate will have authority over and be responsible for the clinical care of patients within the zone department, including scheduling medical staff members and ensuring appropriate clinical coverage is provided. They will also be responsible for ensuring that all department members are compliant with NSH Policies, the Medical Staff Bylaws, and the Medical Staff Rules and Regulations of the NSHA.

Responsibilities
  1. Provide administrative leadership to the department, including regular department meetings and providing meeting minutes to the Zone Medical Executive Director.
  2. Work with Hospitalist Site Leads, Medical Site Leads, and operational leadership to ensure service continuity and meet key patient flow objectives, overseeing scheduling practices including vacation requests, on-call scheduling, and locum utilization.
  3. Participate as an active member of the Zone Medical Advisory Committee (ZMAC) to advise on the quality of care and treatment provided to the zone department's patients, fulfill teaching and research responsibilities, and oversee the department's objectives, planning, budgeting, resource allocation, and utilization.
  4. Make recommendations on physician resource needs of the zone department after consulting with relevant leaders.
  5. Organize and implement the clinical and academic activities of the department, ensuring alignment with NSHA organization and system priorities.
  6. Develop and implement a plan focused on improving access and flow for the zone, including community hospitals and cross-facility transfers.
  7. Attend meetings of the Access and Flow Network Council, contributing to strategies and policies that promote increased access and flow of patients.
  8. Ensure the continual maintenance and enforcement of professional standards within the department and implement quality assurance and improvement.
  9. Address and resolve medical staff issues, overseeing complaint and discipline management as required.
  10. Attend relevant committee meetings as assigned by the Medical Executive Director.
  11. Provide co-leadership along with the Zone administrative director for strategic and operational planning and budgeting.
  12. Monitor the performance and effectiveness of medical staff members and act on issues identified as required.
  13. Review the performance of zone department members annually and provide performance management where needed.
  14. Coordinate medical students and residents in the Zone, supervising residents' education requirements where applicable.
  15. Support the research agenda within the department.
  16. Participate in clinical services planning for the Zone/NSHA.
  17. Work collaboratively with the ZMED and Medical Site Leads to lead recruitment and retention for the department, ensuring new hire and onboarding processes are completed with support from the Specialty Site Lead as required.
  18. Participate in leadership development.
Qualifications

MD, licensable in Nova Scotia

3-5 years' experience as a medical department member with experience engaging, mentoring, and empowering teams and stakeholders in a collaborative, participative manner.
