The Legal Services Division of Alberta Justice serves as the civil legal consultant to the Government of Alberta. Legal professionals within this Division engage in a variety of legal disciplines.

54 bi-weekly ($216,978 - $248,016/year)

The Alberta Legislative Counsel Office seeks a proactive and dynamic individual with proven skills in legislative drafting and leadership. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional English writing skills to produce high-quality Government Bills for introduction in the Legislative Assembly, as well as draft Regulations and Orders in Council for Government.

Your role will involve providing counsel to the Government and Crown agencies regarding the formulation of legislation and regulatory policies. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Drafting intricate bills and regulations in alignment with Legislative Counsel Office standards.
  • Delivering legal and legislative advice and insights on legislative proposals from Ministries.
  • Assisting ministry officials in realizing their legislative proposals and policy objectives.
  • Offering impartial, high-quality legislative drafting services to the government.

To succeed in this position, you will need:

  • A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and active membership or immediate eligibility for full membership with the Law Society of Alberta.
  • A strong client focus, effective verbal and written communication skills, and strong interpersonal abilities.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in drafting government legislation, particularly in a legislative drafter role within a Government Legislative Counsel Office or a Parliamentary Counsel Office.
  • Experience in drafting complex and politically sensitive government bills and regulatory projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a legislative counsel office.
  • A graduate diploma or professional certificate in Legislative drafting is an asset.

This position requires 25 hours of work per week, Monday to Friday.
