The Legislative Counsel Office seeks motivated and dynamic individuals with proven skills in legislative drafting. Candidates should possess exceptional English writing abilities to create high-quality Government Bills for introduction in the Legislative Assembly, as well as draft Regulations and Orders in Council for the Government. Additionally, you will provide guidance to the Government and Crown agencies regarding the development of legislative and regulatory policies.
Reporting to the Deputy Chief Legislative Counsel, your role will involve assisting the Alberta Government and its Ministries in achieving their legislative goals by drafting intricate bills and regulations that adhere to the standards set by the Legislative Counsel Office, while also providing related legal services.
This position will ensure that the policy objectives of client Ministries are fulfilled by:
- Offering legal and legislative advice on proposals made by ministries;
- Guiding ministry officials on their legislative proposals and supporting them in realizing their policy objectives through legislation;
- Delivering impartial, high-quality legislative drafting services to the government;
- Drafting bills and regulations efficiently and effectively, in line with established drafting standards;
- Addressing client ministries' inquiries and concerns regarding the creation, drafting, and submission of regulations.
A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (JD) is essential. Candidates must be active members or have immediate eligibility for full membership with the Law Society of Alberta. A minimum of 2 years of experience in legislative drafting is required.

Strong client focus, effective verbal and written communication skills, and interpersonal abilities are crucial, as you will need to comprehend your client's policy goals and articulate them within a legislative framework that is clear and understandable. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively is vital for meeting the demands of this position.
Ideal candidates will possess:
- A minimum of 2 years of experience drafting government legislation, ideally as a legislative drafter for a Government Legislative Counsel Office or a Parliamentary Counsel Office;
- Completion of at least one legislative drafting course;
- Exceptional legal, problem-solving, and communication skills;
- Outstanding analytical, research, and writing abilities.
Additional assets may include:
- Experience in developing legislation, such as working as a legislative planner with a provincial or federal Government;
- Experience as a solicitor within a Government Department providing advice on the interpretation and application of legislation;
- A graduate diploma or professional certificate in Legislative Drafting.
