Job Overview

The Track Operations Assistant Supervisor plays a pivotal role in managing the operational activities within a designated area, focusing on track inspections and maintenance tasks. This position is essential for overseeing the replacement of essential track components such as rails, ties, switches, and ballasts. Additionally, the role provides crucial support to the Track Supervisor on a daily basis.

Main Responsibilities

  • Direct engineering operations in alignment with CN's operational framework.
  • Supervise and guide the activities of track crews, track personnel, and hi-rail operations.
  • Ensure adherence to safe work practices, Transport Canada regulations, and CN's policies and standards.
  • Provide clear leadership and objectives to team members, offering coaching and feedback through consistent performance evaluations.
  • Implement collective agreements and company policies by conducting investigations, suggesting corrective measures, and addressing grievances.
  • Manage budgets and workforce efficiency in accordance with CN's guidelines and core principles.
  • Communicate track conditions and daily production updates to senior management for necessary adjustments.
  • Conduct regulatory inspections to ensure track safety and document findings in the Track Inspection System (TIS) for ongoing monitoring.
  • Follow up on reported track issues to guarantee compliance with established standards.
  • Engage in activities related to derailments and service disruptions, collaborating with Transportation and Mechanical teams to identify causes and preventive measures.
  • Perform safety audits for the unionized workforce and lead safety initiatives.
  • Plan, schedule, and execute track repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Respond effectively to emergency situations.

Working Conditions

This position involves a combination of office work and outdoor activities in various weather conditions, often requiring irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. The role necessitates frequent travel (up to 50%) within the assigned territory, sometimes with little notice. The incumbent must be capable of meeting tight deadlines and managing high-pressure situations, including responding to emergencies and lifting up to 70 lbs.

Qualifications

Experience

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in safety compliance.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and problem-solving.
  • Relevant work experience in similar environments or in regulatory/safety contexts.
  • Experience in budget management.
  • Labour relations experience, including interpreting collective agreements, responding to grievances, and negotiating with union representatives.
  • Supervisory experience with a unionized workforce.

Education/Certification/Designation

  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED).
  • Bachelor's Degree (preferred).
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Certification in Railroad Operating Signals (preferred).
