Job Overview

The Track Operations Assistant Supervisor plays a crucial role in managing the activities within a designated area focused on track evaluation and maintenance. This position is tasked with overseeing the replacement of essential track components such as rails, ties, switches, and ballasts, while also providing essential support to the Track Supervisor.

Main Duties

  • Direct engineering activities in alignment with CN's operational framework.
  • Supervise and coordinate the efforts of track crews, track personnel, and hi-rail operations.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols, Transport Canada regulations, and CN's policies during engineering operations.
  • Provide leadership with clear objectives and guidance, offering coaching and feedback through regular performance assessments.
  • Implement collective agreements and company policies by conducting investigations, suggesting corrective measures, and addressing grievances.
  • Manage budgets and enhance workforce efficiency in accordance with CN policies and guiding principles.
  • Communicate track conditions and daily production updates to senior management for necessary adjustments.
  • Conduct regulatory inspections to ensure track safety and input findings into the Track Inspection System (TIS) for ongoing monitoring.
  • Follow up on reported track issues to maintain compliance with established standards.
  • Engage in activities related to derailments and service disruptions, collaborating with Transportation and Mechanical teams to identify causes and prevent future occurrences.
  • Conduct safety audits for the unionized workforce and facilitate safety engagements.
  • Plan, schedule, and execute track repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Respond effectively to emergency situations.

Work Environment

This position involves a combination of office work and outdoor activities in various weather conditions, requiring flexibility with irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Regular travel (up to 50%) across the assigned territory may occur with little notice. The role demands the ability to meet tight deadlines, manage stress, and respond to unexpected situations, including the capability to lift up to 70 lbs.

Qualifications

Experience

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in safety compliance.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and problem-solving.
  • Relevant experience in similar working conditions or in a regulatory or safety-focused environment.
  • Budget management experience is an asset.
  • Labour relations experience, including collective agreement interpretation, grievance response, and negotiations with union representatives.
  • Experience supervising a unionized workforce is preferred.

Education/Certification

  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED).
  • Bachelor's Degree is an asset.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Certification in Railroad Operating Signals is an asset.
