Job Overview

The Track Operations Assistant Supervisor plays a pivotal role in managing the operational activities within a designated area, focusing on track assessment and maintenance. This position involves overseeing the replacement of essential track components such as rails, ties, switches, and ballasts, while also providing essential support to the Track Supervisor.

Main Duties

  • Direct engineering operations in alignment with CN's operational framework.
  • Supervise and coordinate the efforts of track crews, employees, and hi-rail operations.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols, Transport Canada regulations, and CN's operational standards.
  • Guide team members with clear objectives and provide mentorship through consistent performance evaluations.
  • Implement collective agreements and company policies by conducting inquiries, suggesting corrective measures, and addressing grievances.
  • Manage budgets and optimize workforce efficiency in accordance with CN policies and the Five Guiding Principles.
  • Communicate track conditions and daily production updates to senior management for necessary adjustments.
  • Conduct regulatory inspections to maintain track safety and document findings in the Track Inspection System (TIS).
  • Follow up on reported track concerns to ensure compliance with established standards.
  • Engage in activities related to derailments and service interruptions, collaborating with Transportation and Mechanical teams to identify causes and prevent future occurrences.
  • Perform safety audits for the unionized workforce and lead safety initiatives.
  • Plan, schedule, and execute track repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Respond effectively to emergency situations.

Work Environment

This position requires a blend of office-based work and outdoor activities in varying weather conditions, often necessitating irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. The role involves frequent travel (up to 50%) across the assigned area, sometimes with little notice. Due to the nature of the responsibilities, the individual must manage tight deadlines and cope with high-pressure situations. The role also requires the ability to lift weights of up to 70 lbs.

Qualifications

Experience

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in safety compliance.
  • Proven ability in troubleshooting and problem-solving.
  • Relevant experience in similar working conditions or within a regulatory or safety-focused environment.
  • Experience in budget management.
  • Familiarity with labor relations, including interpreting collective agreements, addressing grievances, and negotiating with union representatives.
  • Experience supervising a unionized workforce.

Education/Certification

  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED).
  • Bachelor's Degree is an asset.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Certification in Railroad Operating Signals is an asset.
