Position Overview

Reporting to the Aquatics Coordinator, Programs, this leadership position is accountable for the comprehensive management of Lifesaving Society Swim for Life & Leadership programs. Key responsibilities include overseeing staff supervision, program planning, scheduling, performance assessments, and contributing to the enhancement of Aquatic programs at the Canada Games Centre. This role also involves administrative tasks, assisting in program delivery, addressing personnel matters, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. The Aquatics Supervisor, Programs must demonstrate exceptional organizational skills, effective time management, and timely completion of scheduling responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the delivery of aquatic programs and services
  • Ensure all programming adheres to Lifesaving Society standards, CGC guidelines, and internal policies
  • Supervise evening and weekend lessons (approximately 4 hours daily) on the pool deck
  • Assess staff and programs to maintain high-quality standards
  • Provide immediate coverage for swim instructor/lifeguard needs and serve as a substitute when necessary
  • Develop and oversee staff schedules for aquatic initiatives
  • Communicate effectively with staff and the public, addressing any concerns promptly
  • Collaborate with the Aquatics Coordinator to align program quality with the Centre's values and Sport for Life vision
  • Assist in creating and updating procedural documents and training materials for staff
  • Support the input of program registrations, modifications, and cancellations
  • Exhibit independent judgment, professionalism under pressure, and leadership during emergencies in the absence of the Aquatics Coordinators
  • Demonstrate leadership skills that foster trust and confidence among colleagues and the public
  • Work collaboratively with all organizational levels (supervisors, staff, members, and patrons)
  • Coordinate with all CGC departments in service delivery
  • Perform all duties associated with the Person on Duty (POD) as scheduled
  • Execute additional responsibilities as assigned by Aquatics Coordinators and/or Manager of Recreation & Program Services

Qualifications

Mandatory (to be maintained as a condition of employment)

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in an aquatic environment in a supervisory capacity
  • Current National Lifeguard Award (NL) & Airway Management – Pool option (within two years)
  • Intermediate Workplace First Aid (formerly SFA)
  • Swim for Life Instructor (SFL)
  • Lifesaving Instructor (LSI)
  • Instructor Training
  • Examiner
  • Experience in program development and execution in a busy recreational setting
  • Experience in supervising, mentoring, and coaching staff
  • Experience with inclusive programming

Desirable

  • National Lifeguard & First Aid Instructor certifications
  • Airway Management Instructor certification
  • HCP certification
  • WHIMIS certification
  • High Five Training certification
  • Experience with Legend or Recreation Software

Working Conditions

  • Adaptability to a variable work schedule, including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends
  • Current schedule includes Tuesday–Friday 11:00am to 7:00pm and Saturday 7:30am to 3:30pm, subject to change based on program needs
  • Must fulfill Person on Duty (POD) shifts from 2:30pm to 10:30pm on a rotating basis
  • Expanded hours may be required during peak program weeks and staff evaluation periods
  • Work environment entails physical, emotional, and mental demands
  • Safe lifting, carrying, and first aid techniques are essential
  • Exposure to loud environments while maintaining focus

Compensation

Salary will be determined based on a range from $35,700–$48,960, commensurate with education and experience.
