The Canada Games Centre (CGC) is a dynamic multi-sport community and recreation facility located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This expansive 176,000 sqft center is operated by a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering physical literacy, wellness, and fitness, while also supporting high-performance sports and athlete development. The Centre offers a wide range of sport and recreation programs, camps, fitness classes, and more, all within an inclusive atmosphere. Position Overview

Reporting to the Aquatics Coordinator, Programs, this leadership position is accountable for the comprehensive management of Lifesaving Society Swim for Life & Leadership programs. Key responsibilities include overseeing staff supervision, program planning, scheduling, performance assessments, and contributing to the advancement of Aquatic programs at the Canada Games Centre. This role also entails administrative duties, assisting in program delivery, managing personnel matters, and ensuring compliance with safety policies and procedures. The Aquatics Supervisor, Programs must demonstrate exceptional organizational skills, effective time management, and timely completion of scheduling tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the execution of aquatic programs and services
  • Ensure all programming adheres to Lifesaving Society standards, CGC standards, and internal policies
  • Supervise weekday evening and weekend morning lessons (approximately 4 hours daily) on the pool deck
  • Assess staff and programs to maintain high-quality standards
  • Provide immediate coverage for swim instructor/lifeguard roles as needed
  • Develop and manage staff schedules for aquatic programs
  • Communicate effectively with staff and the public, addressing concerns promptly
  • Collaborate with the Aquatics Coordinator to ensure program quality aligns with the Centre's values and vision
  • Assist in creating and enhancing procedural documents and training materials for staff
  • Support the input of program registrations, modifications, and cancellations
  • Exhibit independent judgment when necessary, maintaining professionalism under pressure and managing emergency situations in the absence of the Aquatics Coordinators
  • Demonstrate leadership skills that foster confidence and trust among colleagues and the public
  • Work collaboratively with all organizational levels (supervisors, staff, members, and patrons)
  • Coordinate with all CGC departments in service delivery
  • Fulfill the responsibilities of a Person on Duty (POD) as scheduled
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by Aquatics Coordinators and/or Manager of Recreation & Program Services

Qualifications

Mandatory (to be maintained as a condition of employment)

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in an aquatic environment in a supervisory capacity
  • Current National Lifeguard Award (NL) & Airway Management – Pool option (within two years)
  • Intermediate Workplace First Aid certification
  • Swim for Life Instructor certification
  • Lifesaving Instructor certification
  • Instructor Training certification
  • Examiner certification
  • Experience in program development and implementation in a busy recreation setting
  • Experience in supervising, mentoring, and coaching staff
  • Experience with inclusive programming

Desirable

  • National Lifeguard & First Aid Instructor certifications
  • Airway Management Instructor certification
  • HCP certification
  • WHIMIS certification
  • High Five Training certification
  • Experience with Legend or Recreation Software

Working Conditions

  • Flexible work schedule accommodating early mornings, late evenings, and weekends
  • Current schedule includes Tuesday–Friday 11:00am to 7:00pm and Saturday 7:30am to 3:30pm, subject to change based on program needs
  • May require fulfilling Person on Duty (POD) shifts from 2:30pm to 10:30pm on rotation
  • Expanded hours may be necessary during peak program weeks and staff evaluation periods
  • Work environment entails physical, emotional, and mental demands
  • Safe lifting, carrying, and first aid techniques are essential
  • Exposure to loud environments while maintaining focus

Compensation

Salary will be determined based on a range from $35,700–$48,960, commensurate with education and experience.
