Become an integral part of the Kingston Penitentiary Tours team, where you will engage visitors from diverse backgrounds by delivering captivating historical experiences.

POSITION: HISTORICAL TOURS AND RETAIL ASSOCIATE (student)

HOURS OF WORK: Flexible schedule up to a maximum of 36.25 hours per week (availability for weekends, holidays, evenings, and early mornings is required)

LOCATION:
Kingston Penitentiary
Kingston, Ontario

SALARY: $17.40 per hour

EMPLOYMENT PERIOD: Seasonal employment from April to September and/or September to November

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

In this position, you will be tasked with various duties, including:

  • Acting as a representative for one of Kingston's premier tourism destinations.
  • Welcoming guests, addressing inquiries, providing information about site programming, confirming reservations, and guiding visitors to the starting point of tours.
  • Conducting scripted guided tours, ensuring each visitor has a unique, engaging, and safe experience.
  • Assisting in the sale of select retail merchandise.
  • Performing maintenance tasks, including cleaning and upkeep of the site’s grounds, buildings, and facilities.
  • Prioritizing safety and promptly reporting any unsafe conditions to your supervisor.
  • Embracing the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion in all interactions with staff and visitors.
QUALIFICATIONS

Required Skills:

  • Ability to learn and convey historical information effectively within a limited timeframe.
  • Capacity to manage groups of up to 30 visitors, ensuring organized and timely tours.
  • Proficiency in operating cash registers and handling transactions accurately.
  • Capability to take initiative and work independently or collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills to enhance program delivery.
  • Understanding of safety protocols to maintain a secure environment for all.

Student Eligibility: Candidates must be currently enrolled in or have recently graduated from a secondary or post-secondary institution.
