IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Executive Director.

AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY: To implement trauma-informed and strengths-based cultural approaches to address mental health and wellbeing concerns.

ANNUAL SALARY: $54,000.00

SCOPE:

  • The Indigenous Mental Health and Addictions Worker (IMHAW) is tasked with providing support to the urban Indigenous community. The successful candidate will be expected to cultivate collaborative relationships with internal programs at The Indigenous Network and various mental health and addictions care agencies to achieve desired outcomes. The IMHAW will report directly to the Executive Director. A strong understanding of Indigenous cultural practices and teachings is essential for this role.

KEY JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Deliver single-session peer support and/or counseling services, including assessment, care planning, and referrals for individuals, couples, and families facing crises or mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, addictions, and more.
  • Provide referrals to additional resources and collaborate with other services as necessary.
  • Work in partnership with The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), attending meetings and providing updates on programs.
  • Assist clients in accessing necessary resources to achieve their health and wellness goals.
  • Engage with clients to explore their experiences and promote self-insight, ensuring confidentiality in a safe environment.
  • Plan and schedule Elder/Healer Days using the Flexbooker platform.
  • Coordinate workshops aimed at raising awareness and providing education on mental health and wellness.

SUPPORT WORK:

  • Participate in inter-agency meetings or projects that enhance client services.
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings and annual general meetings.
  • Establish and maintain trusting relationships with clients.
  • Plan and facilitate online training and activities, including educational efforts during public health challenges.
  • Handle crisis contacts professionally, ensuring appropriate referrals and follow-ups.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:

  • Maintain accurate files, case records, and statistical data as required.
  • Prepare necessary correspondence and complete administrative tasks as needed.
  • Submit timely reports to relevant health networks as requested.
  • Foster effective professional relationships with Indigenous and non-Indigenous agencies.
  • Participate in meetings as directed by the Executive Director.
  • Adhere to Indigenous values and teachings throughout all responsibilities.
  • Be available for occasional evening and weekend work.
  • Sign and adhere to confidentiality agreements and organizational policies upon employment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Completion of a post-secondary diploma/degree in Social Work or certified counseling.
  • A minimum of two years of direct mental health support experience.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with vulnerable populations.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Understanding of risk factors and assessment processes.
  • Familiarity with available resources and services for clients.
  • Knowledge of professional standards and ethical guidelines.
  • Awareness of the historical and current challenges faced by individuals with mental health issues.
  • Insight into Indigenous cultural practices and teachings.

SKILLS:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Proficient assessment and analytical skills.
  • Competence in using technology, including MS Word and client databases.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

ABILITIES:

  • Capacity to manage complex issues and trauma.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Maintain a respectful and collaborative approach with clients and colleagues.
