Position Overview

The Safety and Wellness Advocate is responsible for the development, execution, and oversight of wellness and safety initiatives across all Highline farm locations. This role includes managing disability and return-to-work programs and supporting the daily functions of the Safety department.

Key Responsibilities

1. Associate Wellness

  • Collaborate with management to foster associate wellness and prevent injuries.
  • Advocate for health and wellness policies and philosophies.

2. Disability and Compensation Management

  • Document all incidents promptly.
  • Oversee Return to Work and Modified Work Assignments.
  • Ensure compliance with accident investigation and Workers Compensation reporting.
  • Facilitate communication regarding compensation claims with relevant departments.
  • Manage compensation claims across Highline locations with support from the Corporate Disability Manager.

3. Training and Development

  • Identify training needs and provide coaching to associates as necessary.
  • Design and implement educational programs related to safety to empower staff.

4. Safety Policies and Compliance

  • Recommend and enforce safety policies to meet local and provincial regulations.
  • Act as a liaison with regulatory bodies for inquiries and inspections.
  • Coordinate safety inspections and audits across all farms.
  • Prepare and submit weekly safety reports.
  • Address safety infractions with appropriate management.
  • Evaluate safety hazards associated with chemicals and ensure compliance.
  • Maintain Safety Data Sheets and oversee contractor compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Facilitate safety orientations and maintain training records for new hires.
  • Deliver safety training for specific operational needs.
  • Support leave management for associates returning from illness or injury.
  • Build trusted relationships with associates and leadership.
  • Promote a culture reflecting our core values of integrity, excellence, and respect.
  • Lead Joint Health and Safety Committee meetings and ensure timely resolution of safety concerns.
  • Maintain safety bulletin boards with up-to-date information.
  • Manage procurement of safety supplies and maintain training records.

5. Investigations and Emergency Response

  • Conduct thorough investigations of safety incidents and recommend corrective actions.
  • Empower to halt operations if safety concerns arise.
  • Assist in drafting corrective actions for safety violations.
  • Maintain current first aid certifications and ensure first aid facilities are operational.
  • Document first aid treatments and maintain records.

Qualifications

1. Education and Experience

A combination of relevant education and professional experience is required:

  • At least 5 years of experience in Health and Safety.
  • Preference for candidates with CRSP or CTST designations.
  • Degree, diploma, or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or Human Resource Management.
  • Familiarity with Workplace Safety and WCB Disability Claims Management.
  • Proficient in computer applications for documentation and reporting.
  • Strong communication skills are essential.
  • Experience in incident reporting and investigation.
  • First Aid Certification is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations.
