Role Summary

As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, you will play a crucial role within a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team dedicated to providing integrated services and programs for our clients and patients.

This position offers a unique opportunity to utilize your clinical expertise, leadership skills, and collaborative spirit to support your designated unit.


Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate patient abilities, care needs, risks, and available resources within the unit.
  • Develop patient care plans, manage workloads, and implement changes in processes and policies, while providing orientation and coaching opportunities.
  • Serve as a nursing resource and liaison for the team and other staff members in delivering patient care.
  • Engage in patient care discussions, committee meetings, and teams aimed at enhancing patient care and supporting quality improvement initiatives.
  • Work closely with healthcare team members, clients, and families to formulate personalized care strategies.
  • Address concerns regarding patient status, unsafe practices, and professional conduct.
  • Identify and propose enhancements to improve unit operations.
  • Facilitate effective patient discharge and transfer processes in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Encourage a team-oriented approach to client care, fostering positive relationships and a supportive work environment.
  • Monitor and follow up on prescribed interventions and care goals.
  • Model professional behavior and practice in line with the standards set by the College of Registered Nurses.
  • Mentor nursing staff and provide constructive feedback to promote best practices.
  • Participate in educational programs and workshops to enhance professional skills and meet personal development goals.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Education Team to promote continuous learning and application of knowledge.

Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required; a Master's degree in Nursing is preferred.
  • Must be registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • A minimum of 20 years of experience in acute psychiatric or inpatient settings, or a combination of 15 years in acute psychiatric care and 5 years in emergency mental health.
  • Advanced knowledge and expertise in psychiatric and mental health nursing.
  • Familiarity with the Ontario Mental Health Act, PHIPA, and initiatives aimed at enhancing patient safety and care.
  • Experience with therapeutic approaches such as DBT, CBT, and crisis intervention.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care practices.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals and organizations.
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team focused on quality improvement and client engagement.
  • Respect for diversity in all its forms, including socioeconomic status, race, culture, and belief systems.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development in response to emerging health issues and research.
  • Strong organizational, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Interest in mentoring and teaching within a clinical setting.
  • Familiarity with change management and developmental theories is an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and various databases.
