Special Needs Camp/Program Director

Job Summary:
The City of Toronto is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to lead our adapted recreation programs and camps. As the Special Needs Camp/Program Director, you will be responsible for the overall operation, planning, and administration of our adapted recreation programs and camps.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supports the development and implementation of adapted recreation programs and camps that promote inclusivity and accessibility.
- Provides training and support to staff and volunteers to ensure they have the necessary skills and knowledge to work with individuals with special needs.
- Recruits and hires staff and volunteers to support the delivery of adapted recreation programs and camps.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of adapted recreation programs and camps and makes recommendations for improvement.
- Performs administrative tasks necessary to support the delivery of adapted recreation programs and camps.
- Advocates on behalf of participants with special needs and ensures that their needs are met.
- Ensures that behavior management techniques are implemented to support participants with special needs.
- Ensures that health and safety procedures are followed when assisting participants with personal hygiene, lifts, transfers, and life skills.
- Reviews participant files and communicates information with staff as needed.
- Oversees the administration of medication for participants.
- Maintains an inventory of program equipment and ensures that it is kept in good working order.
- Reports any damage to equipment and orders supplies as needed.
- Interacts with staff, participants, and community members to provide program information and support.
- Facilitates the delivery of special events and programs.
- Attends and participates in meetings and training sessions to stay up-to-date on best practices and policies.
- Takes action to deal with incidents, problems, and emergencies and complies with City policies and procedures.
- Ensures that programs are modified to promote an inclusive environment and meet the needs of participants with special needs.
- Ensures that staff follow the principles of Healthy Child Development (HIGH FIVE) in the planning and delivery of programs.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Extensive experience working with individuals with special needs in a recreation or camp setting.
- Experience directing, planning, and administering recreational programs and camps.
- Experience with health and safety and public health issues specific to the disability field.
- Relevant education is an asset.
- Must produce original current Standard First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation certifications as recognized by the WSIB.
- Must possess certification in Parks and Recreation Ontario's Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD).
