Position Overview

The newly enhanced unit, which encompasses services for general medicine and surgical procedures, is supported by a dedicated and driven multidisciplinary team committed to delivering outstanding patient and family-centered care. The daily operations of the unit are dynamic, reflecting the diverse patient population and a wide range of diagnoses. This unit is backed by a Clinical Resource Nurse, a Professional Practice Clinician, and a Patient Care Manager.

The successful candidate will deliver safe, evidence-based nursing care to an acute medical and surgical patient demographic by integrating interpersonal communication with clinical expertise and skills.

  • Ability to operate within the full scope of practice as defined by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Demonstrated competency in patient assessment, appropriate intervention, and outcome evaluation.
  • Knowledge and experience in providing care for patients with diverse needs, including but not limited to: initiation and maintenance of IVs, medication administration via various routes, blood product administration, patient-controlled analgesia, TPN, care and maintenance of CVADs, capillary blood glucose monitoring, NG tubes, chest tubes, enteral feeds, wound management, oxygen therapy, and tracheostomies.
  • Capability to provide appropriate care to pre-operative and post-operative patients.
  • Proficiency in interpreting normal and abnormal laboratory values with suitable nursing interventions.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize care delivery in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Understanding of the RN's role as part of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Effective, respectful communication with patients, visitors, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Commitment to providing patient-centered and family-centered care.
  • Dedication to ongoing education and professional development.

Qualifications

  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification approved by Heart & Stroke required at the time of hire.
  • Recent experience in a medical/surgical acute care setting is essential.
  • Telemetry experience is mandatory.
  • Completion of Coronary Care I within six months of hire is required.
  • Critical care experience is preferred.
  • Physical Assessment Course is an asset.
  • Ability to prioritize and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Organized and capable of working effectively in a team setting.
  • Previous experience with Meditech and McKesson Visibility is advantageous.
  • Strong patient assessment skills are required.
  • A caring, compassionate, and customer-focused attitude towards patients and families.
  • Physical capability to meet the demands of the role.
  • A satisfactory employment and attendance record is required.

Work Schedule: Various rotating 12-hour shifts.

Compensation: Competitive hourly wage.
