Position Overview
This position is responsible for the evaluation and endorsement of research initiatives submitted to the UBC Behavioural Research Ethics Board (BREB), ensuring adherence to ethical guidelines and legal standards. A significant aspect of this role includes educating university faculty and staff on ethical practices and facilitating training sessions for BREB members. Furthermore, the officer manages the administrative functions of the BREB, offers advice on ethics policies, and collaborates with various ethics committees. As a non-voting participant of the BREB, this role is integral to the assessment of intricate research proposals.

Organizational Context
Reporting to the Senior Research Ethics Analyst, this role operates autonomously to oversee ethics submissions within the BREB office and engages with stakeholders on policy-related issues.

Key Responsibilities

The primary duties encompass:

Policy and Administrative Oversight:

  • Advising researchers on compliance with regulatory standards
  • Ensuring uniformity in decision-making practices
  • Providing training on the digital submission system
  • Managing the administrative functions of the BREB
  • Training new members of the BREB
  • Conducting consultations for high-risk research projects
  • Acting as a liaison for studies involving multiple ethics committees

Preliminary Review:

  • Guiding researchers on participant recruitment and consent processes
  • Overseeing the preliminary review of new submissions
  • Preparing documentation for review meetings

Post-Review Activities:

  • Communicating outcomes to researchers
  • Issuing Certificates of Ethical Approval
  • Managing requirements following the review

Review Process:

  • Evaluating and approving research studies in accordance with standard operating procedures
  • Determining the appropriate review level for specific cases
  • Participating in the BREB as a non-voting member

Administrative Management Duties:

  • Creating educational materials
  • Facilitating research across multiple sites
  • Building a network of research contacts

Impact of Errors/Judgment

Misjudgments could adversely affect funding opportunities and relationships with researchers. Timely and precise information is essential for supporting research initiatives.

Supervision Structure
This position operates under the general guidance of the Senior Research Ethics Analyst.

Mentorship Responsibilities
Providing guidance and support to junior staff members.

Qualifications Required
A post-graduate degree with four years of relevant experience or an undergraduate degree with six years of experience. A commitment to diversity and inclusion is crucial.

Preferred Qualifications

A graduate degree, research experience, familiarity with regulatory standards, strong decision-making capabilities, and effective communication skills are highly desirable.
