POSITION SUMMARY:

Title: Specialist, Intervenor for the Deafblind Community

Position Status: Contract (one year, full-time)

Reports to: Manager, Deafblind Community Services

At CNIB Deafblind Community Services (DBCS), we are dedicated to ensuring that individuals who are Deafblind experience a life filled with opportunities, challenges, and joy.

As a prominent provider of specialized assistance and emergency services for the Deafblind population in Canada, DBCS is committed to empowering individuals to enhance their independence and engagement with their surroundings.

Key Responsibilities:

A Specialist Intervenor is responsible for a diverse range of tasks, primarily serving as a communicator and sighted guide for individuals with dual sensory impairments.

  • Deliver personalized support to Deafblind individuals in various settings, including home and community.
  • Facilitate access to vital information, aiding individuals in making informed choices and enhancing communication.
  • Provide environmental insights and guidance.
  • Collaborate with Deafblind individuals to assess their support needs.
  • Encourage active participation in community activities, fostering social connections through recreation, education, and advocacy.

Qualifications:

  • Understanding of intervention theories and principles.
  • Familiarity with Deafblindness, Deaf culture, and related health concerns across different life stages.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-driven and adaptable, capable of managing multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred Experience:

  • Diploma or degree in human services or relevant experience with Deafblind individuals.
  • Willingness to learn and utilize various communication methods (e.g., Two-Hand Manual, American Sign Language) and Braille.
  • Experience with diverse populations across socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Professional demeanor with the ability to establish rapport with stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with assistive technology is advantageous.
  • Flexibility to travel and work varied hours.
