In this role, you will operate under technical guidance, managing the underwriting of risks within our Commercial Mid-Market portfolio. You will work within defined authority limits on assignments that demand a high level of technical expertise and coordination. Your responsibilities will include adhering to underwriting policies, guidelines, and applicable insurance laws.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Key Responsibilities
  • Execute a variety of tasks in line with departmental protocols.
  • Assess applications and financial criteria for complex risks, determining their acceptability based on company standards. Identify the necessity for further evidence of insurability and develop appropriate strategies.
  • Establish suitable pricing through comprehensive financial and competitive analyses, ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Prepare quotes and respond to inquiries from brokers, policyholders, and external stakeholders, escalating issues to management with proposed solutions when necessary. Engage in negotiations with brokers to achieve favorable outcomes.
  • Inform brokers of any adverse underwriting decisions, changes in rates, requirements, and status updates.
  • Evaluate the quality, quantity, and profitability of underwritten risks, generating reports for management review.
  • Promote products and services within the brokerage community and conduct field visits to strengthen broker relationships.
  • Provide mentorship and support to fellow underwriters and collaborate with other departments, particularly regarding cross-selling opportunities.
  • Stay informed on relevant provincial and federal regulations, industry trends, and share insights with colleagues.
  • Utilize advanced features in CNA systems to carry out daily responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with specialists or management on risks that exceed your authority or require special handling.

Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

Qualifications and Skills
  • In-depth knowledge of underwriting principles and practices within the insurance industry.
  • Proven technical expertise and product-specific knowledge.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation abilities, with the capacity to engage effectively with all levels of internal and external partners.
  • Ability to work autonomously.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Capacity to exercise independent judgment and make critical business decisions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant business software.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience. Preferred professional designations.
  • Typically, a minimum of five years of underwriting experience.
