Lead Marine Engineer

The City of New York's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) plays a vital role in enhancing the environment and safeguarding public health for all residents by managing a vast water supply and wastewater treatment system. As the largest municipal water and wastewater utility in the United States, DEP employs nearly 6,000 professionals dedicated to maintaining high standards of service.
The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) oversees the operation and upkeep of facilities dedicated to sewage treatment across the city's five boroughs. This encompasses 14 wastewater treatment plants, sludge management facilities, collection systems, and various laboratory and harbor operations.
Under broad administrative guidance, the selected candidate will undertake the responsibilities of a Senior Port Engineer. Key duties will include advising senior management on the maintenance and operational strategies for a fleet of marine vessels, ensuring compliance with regulations set forth by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), managing crew schedules, and overseeing dock operations. Additionally, the candidate will assist in the strategic planning and coordination of a significant capital vessel replacement and maintenance initiative, with an estimated value of $100 million, and supervise repair activities for vessels exceeding 1,600 gross tons.
Minimum Qualifications- A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in engineering, architecture, business administration, or a related field, accompanied by five years of relevant experience in engineering design, construction management, or large-scale project coordination, with at least two years in a supervisory or managerial role;
- A high school diploma or equivalent, paired with nine years of experience as outlined in the first point, including two years in a supervisory or managerial capacity;
- Equivalent education and/or experience as described above. A master's degree in a relevant discipline, a law degree, or a valid New York State Professional Engineer or Registered Architect license may substitute for one year of the required experience, provided that candidates possess the requisite supervisory experience.
Ideal candidates will demonstrate strong communication and leadership abilities, possess a comprehensive understanding of USCG regulations, and have prior experience with large marine vessels, particularly those with diesel engines exceeding 3,000 horsepower. A USCG Merchant Marine Chief Engineer's License (unlimited) is highly desirable.
