Industrial Design Engineer for Autonomous Mobile Robots

About the Role

This specialized role within our professional services organization, comprised of Systems Designers, Systems Integrators, and Project Managers, delivers business value to our end users, channel partners, and OTTO Motors. Our team is responsible for designing and integrating fleets of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and software at customer facilities.

As an Industrial Design Engineer, you will take concepts created by our sales and applications engineering teams and develop detailed designs for solutions, primarily focusing on the mechanical and process aspects. This includes layout design, tooling design, facility equipment interface, customer processes, and throughput analysis.

You will collaborate closely with various professional services team members, as well as our sales, applications engineering, and simulation teams. You will also contribute to defining product requirements and influence our product roadmap.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Understand customer requirements and ensure clarity of all requirements before detailed design.
  • Consult with applications engineering during the requirements and concept definition process; document/update the requirements as needed.
  • Develop detailed designs for AMR systems using OTTO Motors products to meet customer requirements, including workflow definition, layout modifications and review, mechanical design and review of attachments, attachment tooling, and facility equipment that our AMRs interface with.
  • Creatively solve challenges encountered during the project design phase.
  • Utilize Excel/Google Sheets to review customer data, evaluate fleet size, and conduct cycle time analysis.
  • Support the discrete event simulation process by verifying the validity of all inputs required for simulation and working with the customer as well as the internal sim team through data analysis.
  • Plan projects for the deliverables and work packages you own.
  • Effectively document, present, and explain the proposed OTTO solution to the customer team members.
  • Be a trusted technical resource for customers and partners throughout the design phase of a project.
  • Visit customer sites to evaluate material handling operations, processes, existing equipment, and floor layout constraints.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Author new product requirements based on lessons learned from your design and commissioning activities.
  • Work with the systems engineering team to improve project/department tools, processes, and working relationships with other departments.
Required Background
  • 4+ years of relevant work experience.
  • 2+ years of experience working within manufacturing/industrial automation.
  • Mechanical design experience.
  • University degree in Mechanical/Industrial/Manufacturing engineering.
  • Experience working directly with clients/end-users.
Required Skills
  • Planning and organization (how to approach and solve a problem, work breakdown to achieve the end goal).
  • Strong communicator, verbal and written.
  • Self-motivated and organized with a keen eye for detail.
  • Able to identify and communicate the value of OTTO's proposed solution to the customer.
  • Understanding of complex systems, including material handling processes.
  • Proficiency in relevant design software (e.g., CAD).
