About the Role:

As the Head of Mobile Robotics Innovation, you will be instrumental in defining the trajectory of autonomous mobile robotics. With a foundation of pioneering research, your focus will shift towards fostering long-term research initiatives and strengthening collaborations with academic institutions. You will lead efforts to elevate our technology and team, while collaborating with peers across Rockwell's business units to explore transformative opportunities in robotics. Key areas of involvement will include navigation, planning, perception, mapping, deep learning, reinforcement learning, and generative AI, applicable to both single and multi-robot systems. This position offers a remarkable chance to influence the future of mobile robotics and drive significant advancements in a rapidly evolving sector.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and oversee the execution of mobile robot research and development programs.
  • Recruit and manage a dedicated R&D team, providing technical guidance and mentorship to key contributors.
  • Cultivate partnerships with academic institutions for technology transfer, dataset development, and collaborative publications.
  • Ensure OTTO Motors by Rockwell Automation is recognized as a leader in technology through patents, publications, open-source contributions, and public engagements.
  • Stay informed about relevant technologies applicable to autonomous mobile robotics, including historical insights and future trends.
  • Engage in personal prototyping and exploration of significant topics of interest.

Required Experience/Skills:

  • Graduate degree (PhD preferred) in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Physics, Mathematics, or equivalent.
  • Proven experience in managing research programs across varying risk levels, technology readiness levels, timelines, and budgets.
  • Demonstrated leadership in both successful and challenging research initiatives.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of navigation, planning, perception, mapping, deep learning, reinforcement learning, generative AI, and related fields pertinent to autonomous robotics.
  • Familiarity with essential hardware technologies and modalities related to sensing, computation, communication, and actuation.
  • Expertise in one or more of the aforementioned fields, with multiple publications in reputable journals or conferences.
  • Understanding of software development and testing methodologies and tools.
  • Experience in public representation of your work or organization.
  • Hands-on experience in developing, deploying, and maintaining software for robots in real-world settings.
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python, with knowledge of additional languages (Lua, Rust, etc.) being advantageous.
  • Experience with key libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Ceres, or OMPL.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with ROS1, ROS 2, Gazebo, CUDA, and other relevant frameworks.
  • Strong skills in experimental analysis and benchmarking.
