Position Overview

Dalhousie Medical School is recognized for attracting some of the finest students, physicians, and health researchers in Canada. The Director of Research Operations plays a pivotal role in delivering administrative leadership to support the Faculty of Medicine's research ambitions as detailed in the strategic plan.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the implementation of the Faculty's strategic research initiatives, enhancing research capabilities across all departments. Manage approximately 50 Faculty research accounts and budgets, including preparation, oversight, and approval of expenditures.
  • Lead the Research Office team, encompassing recruitment, performance evaluation, professional development, workload distribution, leave management, and disciplinary actions, in accordance with collective agreements and guidelines.
  • In alignment with the strategic objectives, faculty requirements, and emerging challenges, identify, initiate, manage, prioritize, and execute special projects. Foster a collaborative environment that promotes research excellence both within the Faculty and across Dalhousie.
  • Compile and disseminate research information to faculty members, the Associate and Assistant Deans, and the Dean. Collaborate with the Associate Dean (Research) and Faculty and University Communications to develop internal and external communication strategies that highlight the Faculty's research achievements.
  • Work closely with departmental heads, administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure comprehensive support systems and resources are accessible for researchers, including coaching departmental support staff and identifying educational or training opportunities.
  • In partnership with the Faculty of Medicine Data Analyst, oversee the creation of databases and inventories of faculty research data, which are utilized to generate reports for the faculty, university, government, and funding bodies. Coordinate with relevant offices to ensure faculty adherence to established procedures and protocols.

Additional Information

The successful candidate will have the opportunity for hybrid work arrangements, combining in-person campus responsibilities with remote work, as mutually agreed upon based on operational needs and university policies.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline, coupled with a minimum of seven years of experience in a senior-level administrative or operational role (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Familiarity with the Canadian funding landscape as it relates to medical research.
  • Experience in managing intricate budgets.
  • Demonstrated organizational capabilities and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation).
  • Prior experience in staff management with strong leadership abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience within an academic or healthcare research setting.
