Position Overview

Dalhousie Medical School is renowned for attracting some of Canada's finest students, physicians, and health researchers. The Research Operations Executive plays a pivotal role in offering administrative leadership to support the Faculty of Medicine's research goals as delineated in the strategic plan.

Key Responsibilities

  • Directs the implementation of the Faculty's strategic research initiatives, enhancing research capabilities throughout all departments. Oversees approximately 50 Faculty research accounts and budgets, including the preparation, management, and approval of expenditures.
  • Leads the Research Office team, encompassing recruitment, performance evaluation, development, workload distribution, leave management, and disciplinary actions, in accordance with relevant agreements and guidelines.
  • In alignment with the strategic objectives, faculty requirements, and emerging challenges, is accountable for identifying, initiating, managing, prioritizing, and executing special projects. Fosters a collaborative environment that encourages the attainment of research excellence both within the Faculty and across Dalhousie.
  • Responsible for gathering and disseminating research information to faculty members, the Associate and Assistant Deans, and the Dean. Collaborates with the Associate Dean (Research) and Faculty and University Communications to devise internal and external communication strategies that highlight the Faculty's research achievements.
  • Works closely with departmental heads, administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure comprehensive support systems and resources are available for researchers, including mentoring departmental support staff and identifying educational or training opportunities for faculty and staff.
  • In partnership with the Faculty of Medicine Data Analyst, supervises the creation of databases and inventories of faculty research data, which are utilized to generate reports for the faculty, university, government, and funding bodies. Coordinates with relevant offices to ensure faculty adherence to established procedures and protocols.

Note

The successful candidate will have the opportunity for hybrid work arrangements, combining in-person and remote work as mutually agreed upon based on operational needs and university policies.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline, coupled with a minimum of seven years of experience in a senior-level administrative or operational role (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Familiarity with the Canadian granting landscape related to medical research.
  • Experience in managing intricate budgets.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation).
  • Prior experience in staff management with strong leadership capabilities.
