Position Overview: We are seeking an experienced and proactive AVP of National Underwriting to lead our underwriting initiatives. This role reports directly to the VP of Personal Insurance Underwriting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive the technical underwriting strategy for Aviva Canada's Personal & Specialty Lines portfolio.
  • Lead the modernization and simplification of underwriting processes, aligning with our digital transformation goals.
  • Collaborate with Product and Customer teams to develop new products and conduct product reviews, ensuring a balance between customer experience and underwriting risk management.
  • Engage with key stakeholders to enhance automation and efficiency while reducing friction in our processes.
  • Oversee personal insurance underwriting through our Underwriting Transformation, preparing for system upgrades.
  • Foster a strong risk culture within the team, emphasizing accountability and ownership of risk management.
  • Manage resource capacity planning to ensure the team has the necessary skills and capacity to execute the personal insurance strategy.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory oversight across Canadian regions, aligning products, pricing, and practices with legal requirements.
  • Work with IT and business leaders to drive simplification and efficiency in underwriting operations.
  • Monitor regulatory updates and industry bulletins to stay informed on compliance requirements.
  • Support Government Relations efforts from a personal insurance underwriting perspective during advocacy and regulatory reviews.
  • Maintain up-to-date underwriting policies and procedures, incorporating legal changes and industry developments.
  • Contribute to the development of business strategy and risk appetite by providing insights on regulatory and industry trends.
  • Build and maintain relationships with senior leadership and stakeholders across various departments.
  • Assist portfolio leads in managing risk and exposure across all lines of business.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Business, Finance, or a related field; MBA preferred.
  • Professional designations such as CRM, CIP, or FCIP are preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in Technical Insurance functions, particularly in Underwriting or Claims.
  • Demonstrated experience working with regulators and industry committees across Canada.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to synthesize and disseminate complex information accurately.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of engaging with senior leaders and external contacts.
  • High-level problem-solving skills to identify and address gaps in policies and procedures.
  • In-depth understanding of underwriting philosophy, strategies, and relevant documentation.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a geographically dispersed team.
  • A leader with integrity, strong relationship management skills, and effective negotiation abilities.
