Job Summary

Vancouver Coastal Health is seeking a highly skilled Regional Radiation Safety Officer, Nuclear Medicine to join the Medical Imaging Quality & Safety Team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Nuclear Medicine Radiation Safety Program for the VCH Medical Imaging department, ensuring compliance with Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) Acts and Regulations.
  • Promote a culture of radiation safety for staff, patients, and visitors through planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating the NM Radiation Safety Program.
  • Maintain diagnostic, therapeutic, and processing licenses for all NM departments across VCH and lead CNSC license and annual compliance report submissions.
  • Provide leadership to NM Site Radiation Safety Officers (SRSO), the NM Regional Radiation Safety Coordinator (RRSC), and the NM Radiation Safety Committee (RSC).
  • Advise and provide direction to SRSOs and RRSC on radiation safety to prevent unsafe work practices regarding radiation safety in areas that fall under Licensing.
  • Lead emergency response initiatives in collaboration with the RRSC and SRSOs and directly communicate with regulatory agencies on incidents related to radiation safety.
  • Liaise with regulatory agencies and other experts in radiation safety, act as a resource, and regularly communicate with stakeholders on matters relevant to radiation safety.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Science or Engineering from a recognized institution.
  • Five (5) years' recent related professional experience in radiation safety or a related field, including leadership experience and experience in handling and monitoring radioactive material.
  • Completion of a Radiation Safety Officer course from a recognized program applicable for the use of radioactive materials under CNSC regulations.
  • Completion or eligibility for applicable professional designation (e.g., CRPA).
  • Valid BC Driver's License is required.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Utilize superior verbal communication skills to provide training, education, and program reports and to collaborate and influence stakeholders.
  • Apply technical expertise and knowledge of applicable legislation and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with both provincial and federal regulations involving radiation hazards and safety.
  • Interpret information and use sound judgment to investigate actual and potential radiation safety issues.
  • Apply radiation protection content expertise to recognize, evaluate, and control radiation hazards in the workplace.
  • Maintain current knowledge of new developments and research into all aspects of Radiation Safety and recommend/implement best practices accordingly.
  • Develop meaningful indicators of quality for radiation safety and provide constructive reports based on the results of monitoring these indicators.
