Reporting to the Leader of Clinical Nuclear Medicine Physics, the Clinical Nuclear Medicine (NM) Physicist offers specialized expertise in the medical application of physics, facilitating the establishment, management, and upkeep of a comprehensive provincial quality assurance initiative. This encompasses tasks such as operating and overseeing the functional and operational readiness of medical imaging devices, including Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography/Computed Tomography (SPECT/CT) systems, along with associated nuclear medicine apparatus at BC Cancer provincial Molecular Imaging and Therapy facilities and partner institutions.

The Clinical NM Physicist engages in the formulation and evaluation of quantitative imaging and dosimetry investigations for clinical diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine applications (both clinical and research). Collaborating closely with the BC Cancer Molecular Imaging and Therapy Program personnel, regional Medical Physicists, and Radiation Safety Officers, the Clinical NM Physicist plays a vital role in sustaining a regulatory compliant provincial radiation safety program and participates in facility design and radioactive source inventory management. Furthermore, the Clinical NM Physicist is accountable for radiation safety at the Institute of Advanced Medical Isotopes (IAMI) in partnership with TRIUMF and supports radiation safety across the Molecular Imaging and Therapy departments province-wide, ensuring adherence to all pertinent regulations and safety standards.

The Clinical NM Physicist is also involved in research pertaining to physics in molecular imaging and therapy, as well as instrumentation and cancer care, contributing insights and recommendations for innovative imaging and data analysis techniques/methodologies and modifications, maintaining imaging servers, and providing education and mentorship to staff/students on contemporary and emerging imaging advancements.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and manage the technical components of the functional imaging quality assurance program, including equipment assessments for operational readiness. Sustain the quality assurance program by ensuring adherence to protocols for quality control of radioisotopes, which includes documenting testing data and conducting periodic equipment certification and calibration. Provide guidance to vendor service personnel and staff regarding corrective measures and troubleshooting complex or atypical issues, coordinating ongoing equipment maintenance. Oversee and monitor the preparation of therapeutic injections, ensuring the safe and precise application of injected activities by staff for radiopharmaceutical therapies. Conduct internal radiation dosimetry calculations for radiopharmaceutical therapies and research projects. Collaborate with IMITS, technical and medical staff, and researchers to support departmental and clinical trial computer systems, including Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) software, by coordinating system configuration, authorization, and access, performing data management functions to ensure data accuracy and quality, and participating in the development and maintenance of system tools.

Qualifications

A minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience in medical imaging physics within a PET imaging program. Certification from the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM) or American Board of Radiology (ABR) in Nuclear Medicine Physics subspecialty or American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine (ABSNM) is required within two (2) years of entering this role.

You possess:

Knowledge of Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) regulations pertinent to medical imaging. Proficiency in medical imaging technologies, particularly PET/CT and Nuclear Medicine. Comprehensive understanding of radiation and radiation safety, with the capability to educate others. Expertise in dosimetry calculations for radiopharmaceutical therapies. Experience in training and utilizing artificial intelligence models for medical imaging is advantageous. Strong computer skills, particularly in dosimetry software, and proficient programming skills in MATLAB, Python, or other relevant programming languages. Demonstrated computer proficiency with systems and servers utilized in research. Exceptional organizational and time management abilities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Awareness of and commitment to understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related documents. Dedication to fostering lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. Insight into the social, economic, political, and historical contexts affecting Indigenous communities, along with familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism initiatives (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).

Location: Provincial Position and the candidate must be within the vicinity of a regional BC Cancer Centre to work.

Salary Range: $141,146 - $202,898/year. The starting salary for this position will be determined based on the successful candidate's relevant education and experience, aligning with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part-time roles.
