Reporting to the Leader of Clinical Nuclear Medicine Physics, the Clinical Nuclear Medicine (NM) Physicist offers specialized expertise in the medical application of physics to bolster the establishment, administration, and upkeep of a comprehensive provincial quality assurance initiative. This encompasses tasks such as operating and overseeing the functional and operational integrity of medical imaging devices, including Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography/Computed Tomography (SPECT/CT) scanners, along with associated nuclear medicine apparatus at BC Cancer's provincial Molecular Imaging and Therapy facilities and affiliated institutions.
The Clinical NM Physicist engages in the formulation and evaluation of quantitative imaging and dosimetry investigations for clinical diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine applications (both clinical and research-oriented). Collaborating closely with the BC Cancer Molecular Imaging and Therapy Program personnel, regional Medical Physicists, and Radiation Safety Officers, the Clinical NM Physicist ensures adherence to a regulatory-compliant provincial radiation safety framework and participates in facility design and management of radioactive source inventory. Furthermore, the Clinical NM Physicist assumes responsibility for radiation safety at the Institute of Advanced Medical Isotopes (IAMI) in collaboration with TRIUMF and supports radiation safety for the Molecular Imaging and Therapy departments across the province, ensuring compliance with all pertinent regulations and safety standards.
The Clinical NM Physicist also partakes in research associated with physics in molecular imaging and therapy, as well as instrumentation and cancer care, contributing to and providing insights for new imaging and data analysis techniques/methodologies and enhancements, maintaining imaging servers, and educating and mentoring staff/students on current and emerging imaging advancements.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and manage the technical components of the functional imaging quality assurance program, including equipment evaluations for functional and operational integrity. Sustain the quality assurance program by ensuring adherence to protocols for quality control of radioisotopes, which includes logging testing data and conducting periodic certification and calibration of equipment. Provide guidance to vendor service personnel and staff regarding corrective measures and troubleshooting complex or atypical issues, while coordinating ongoing equipment maintenance. Oversee and monitor the preparation of therapeutic injections, ensuring the safe and precise application of injected activities by staff for radiopharmaceutical therapies. Conduct internal radiation dosimetry calculations for radiopharmaceutical therapies and research projects. In collaboration with IMITS, technical and medical personnel, and researchers, support departmental and clinical trial computer systems, including Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) software, by coordinating system configuration, authorization, and access, performing data management functions to ensure data accuracy and quality, and participating in the development and maintenance of system tools.Qualifications
Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience in medical imaging physics within a PET imaging program. Certification from the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM) or American Board of Radiology (ABR) in Nuclear Medicine Physics subspecialty or American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine (ABSNM) is required within two (2) years of entering this role.You possess:
Knowledge of Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) regulations pertaining to medical imaging. Expertise in medical imaging technologies, particularly focusing on PET/CT and Nuclear Medicine. Comprehensive understanding of radiation and radiation safety, with the capability to educate others. Proficiency in dosimetry calculations for radiopharmaceutical therapies. Experience in training and utilizing artificial intelligence models for medical imaging is advantageous. Strong computer skills, especially in dosimetry software, along with excellent programming abilities in MATLAB, Python, and/or other relevant programming languages. Demonstrated proficiency with computer systems and servers utilized in research. Exceptional organizational and time management skills. Strong oral and written communication abilities. Awareness of and commitment to understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related documents. Dedication to fostering meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. Understanding of social, economic, political, and historical factors affecting Indigenous communities, along with familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism initiatives and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).What We Offer

Salary Range: $141,146 - $202,898/year. The starting salary for this position will be determined based on the successful candidate's relevant education and experience, aligning with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part-time roles.
