Position Overview

The University of British Columbia is seeking a dedicated Research Associate specializing in Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopy to enhance the research capabilities of the Quantum Matter Institute. This role is pivotal in addressing complex scientific challenges related to two-dimensional materials and advancing the institute's strategic research objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Initiate and execute innovative research projects focused on the optical characteristics of two-dimensional materials and van der Waals heterostructures.
  • Design, develop, and maintain bespoke optical instrumentation, including time and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy systems.
  • Oversee and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, guiding them in formulating research inquiries and analyzing experimental results.
  • Collaborate on interdisciplinary research initiatives, providing expertise in the adaptation and enhancement of existing equipment.
  • Publish significant findings in reputable scientific journals and assist students in developing their scientific writing and presentation skills.
  • Present research outcomes at international conferences and workshops.
  • Identify research findings with commercial potential and lead the intellectual property and patent application processes.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of research activities and prepare reports to support institutional performance metrics.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Physics or a closely related field, with a minimum of one successful postdoctoral fellowship.
  • Over 10 years of progressively responsible experience in research roles related to ultrafast laser spectroscopy and optical spectroscopy methods.
  • Proven expertise in studying two-dimensional materials and experience with ultra-high vacuum systems.
  • Hands-on experience with laser design, operation, and photoemission spectroscopy.
  • A strong publication record in high-impact journals, demonstrating proficiency in scientific writing and peer review.
  • Experience in mentoring students and collaborating within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently develop and manage research projects.
