Position Overview

The University of British Columbia is seeking a dedicated Research Associate specializing in Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopy to contribute to groundbreaking research initiatives within the Quantum Matter Institute. This role is pivotal in advancing our understanding of quantum materials and their applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute innovative research projects focusing on the optical characteristics of two-dimensional materials and van der Waals heterostructures.
  • Design, build, and maintain specialized optical equipment tailored for various research endeavors, including time and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.
  • Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, guiding them in formulating research inquiries, structuring experimental designs, and interpreting results.
  • Collaborate on interdisciplinary research projects, providing insights on the utilization and enhancement of existing equipment and the acquisition of new technologies.
  • Publish research findings in esteemed peer-reviewed journals and assist students in developing their scientific writing and presentation capabilities.
  • Present research outcomes at international conferences and workshops.
  • Identify research results with commercial potential and lead the intellectual property and patent application processes.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of research activities and prepare reports to support institutional performance metrics.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Physics or a closely related field, complemented by a successful postdoctoral research fellowship.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in research roles, particularly in ultrafast laser spectroscopy and related areas.
  • Extensive expertise in investigating two-dimensional materials through various optical spectroscopy techniques.
  • Proficient in the design and operation of ultra-high vacuum systems.
  • Hands-on experience with fiber and solid-state laser systems, as well as photoemission spectroscopy.
  • A strong publication record in high-impact journals, demonstrating proficiency in scientific writing and peer review.
  • Experience in identifying potential intellectual property and leading patent applications.
  • Proven ability to mentor and instruct students and fellow researchers.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • Strong track record of developing and managing independent research projects.
