Reporting To: Amanda Rigdon - Manager Fraser East

Location: Abbotsford Community Hub Centre

Compensation: $29.60 per hour

Role Overview

The Peer Support Worker plays a crucial role in providing guidance and mentorship to individuals in recovery at Phoenix Society. This position is designed for those with personal experience in overcoming substance use and/or mental health challenges. The Peer Support Worker will collaborate closely with program staff, including Mental Health Workers, Case Managers, and Program Assistants, to foster meaningful connections between residents and the support team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist residents in identifying obstacles and developing constructive strategies to address them.
  • Support residents by discussing their aspirations and relaying feedback to Case Managers or Mental Health Workers.
  • Engage with the Mental Health Worker, Case Manager, and Program Assistants regarding residents who may require additional assistance.
  • Help monitor the well-being of residents experiencing acute psychological distress or mental health crises.
  • Encourage discussions about future housing needs beyond the duration of the Supportive Recovery Housing program.
  • Facilitate safe and supportive group environments for meetings such as AA, NA, CA, and SMART.
  • Utilize personal experiences with recovery to offer empathy and support, helping residents lead fulfilling and authentic lives.
  • Uphold client confidentiality and respect clients' rights to health care information.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with both residents and staff.
  • Promote respect, trust, empathy, and integrity in all interactions.
  • Document necessary information accurately for facility records.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Approximately one year of relevant experience, including lived experience in recovery from substance use or mental health issues.
  • Experience in leading or participating in community groups.
  • Understanding of HIV and its implications.
  • Experience providing one-on-one support in a relevant context.
  • Successful completion of a criminal records check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Completion of Tuberculosis Screening and Employee Immunization Record forms.
  • First aid certification with CPR is required.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary.
