About This Opportunity

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking applications for a permanent full-time certified Palliative Care Physician to become an integral part of the palliative care team. This role involves providing comprehensive care across various settings in the Annapolis Valley. The successful candidate will collaborate with a dedicated interdisciplinary team, including palliative care nurses, social workers, and administrative staff, ensuring a holistic approach to patient care.

Candidates must possess certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (or equivalent) along with a certificate of added competence in Palliative Care. Those certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada should have either a certificate of added competence in Palliative Care or Royal College certification in Palliative Medicine. Preference will be given to candidates with extensive experience in palliative medicine. Eligibility for specialty licensure in Nova Scotia is required, along with the ability to travel independently to various care locations, including hospitals, homes, long-term care facilities, and assisted living residences.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Palliative Care Physician include, but are not limited to:

  • Contributing to the development and implementation of interprofessional initiatives in Palliative Care across all disciplines.
  • Delivering care in various settings, including hospitals, homes, long-term care facilities, assisted living residences, and hospices.
  • Providing ongoing support to patients after initial consultations, including follow-up visits, phone consultations, and collaboration with other healthcare providers.
  • Prescribing and administering medications and treatments, including the use of CADD pumps.
  • Mentoring medical students and family medicine residents from Dalhousie University.
Expected Hours
  • Full-time position - 52 weeks per year, with 6 weeks allocated for vacation and continuing professional development.
  • Monday to Friday, with a daily commitment of 7.5 hours.
Qualifications
  • Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
  • Eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
  • Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
  • Certificate of Added Competence in Palliative Care (CCFP-PC) or equivalent accredited training in Palliative Medicine, or certification as a Palliative Medicine Physician by the Royal College (FRCP-PM) or equivalent.
  • Proven ability and experience in a shared care model across diverse care settings.
  • Demonstrated interest in the palliative approach to care and capacity building with colleagues.
