About This Opportunity

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is currently seeking a dedicated and certified Palliative Care Physician to become a vital part of our palliative care team. This full-time position involves providing comprehensive care throughout various settings in the Annapolis Valley. Our interdisciplinary team includes skilled palliative care nurses, social workers, an administrative assistant, and a program manager, all committed to delivering exceptional patient-centered care.

The successful candidate will collaborate with three other certified Palliative Care Physicians, sharing a 1.5 FTE. In addition to fulfilling a crucial clinical role, the physician will engage in collaboration and consultation with family physicians and medical specialists, utilizing a shared-care model that emphasizes teamwork and communication.

Candidates must possess certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (or equivalent) and hold a certificate of added competence in Palliative Care. Alternatively, candidates certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada must have either a certificate of added competence in Palliative Care or Royal College certification in Palliative Medicine. Preference will be given to those with extensive experience in palliative medicine. Eligibility for specialty licensure in Nova Scotia is required, along with the ability to travel independently to various care settings, including hospitals, homes, long-term care facilities, and assisted living residences.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Palliative Care Physician include, but are not limited to:

  • Contributing to the development and implementation of interprofessional initiatives in Palliative Care across all faculties.
  • Providing care in diverse settings, including hospitals, homes, long-term care facilities, assisted living residences, and hospice.
  • Following patients after initial consultations, ensuring appropriate visits, phone support, and collaboration with other healthcare providers to support family physicians and patients effectively.
  • Prescribing and administering medications and treatments, including the use of CADD pumps.
  • Mentoring medical students and family medicine residents from Dalhousie University.
Expected Hours
  • Full-time position - 52 weeks minus 6 weeks of vacation/CPD paid time.
  • Monday to Friday, 7.5 hours per day.
Qualifications
  • Eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
  • Eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
  • Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
  • Certificate of Added Competence in Palliative Care (CCFP-PC) or equivalent accredited training in Palliative Medicine, or certification as a Palliative Medicine Physician by the Royal College (FRCP-PM) or equivalent.
  • Proven ability and experience working within a shared care model across various care settings.
  • Demonstrated interest in the palliative approach to care and capacity building with colleagues.
