About This Opportunity

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking applications for a permanent full-time certified Palliative Care Physician to enhance the palliative care services in the region. The successful candidate will collaborate with a dedicated interdisciplinary team that includes palliative care nurses, social workers, and administrative support. This role involves working alongside three other certified Palliative Care Physicians who share a combined 1.5 FTE.

Candidates must possess certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (or equivalent) and hold a certificate of added competence in Palliative Care. Those certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada should have either a certificate of added competence in Palliative Care or Royal College certification in Palliative Medicine. Preference will be given to candidates with substantial full-time experience in palliative medicine. Eligibility for specialty licensure in Nova Scotia is required, along with the ability to travel independently to various care settings.

The region offers a range of healthcare facilities, including community hospitals and a regional hospital that provides extensive services such as:

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Palliative Care Physician include, but are not limited to:

  • Contributing to the development and implementation of interprofessional initiatives in Palliative Care across various faculties.
  • Providing care across multiple settings, including hospitals, homes, long-term care facilities, assisted living residences, and hospice.
  • Following up with patients post-initial consultation through appropriate visits, phone support, and collaboration with other healthcare providers.
  • Prescribing and administering medications and treatments, including the use of CADD pumps.
  • Mentoring medical students and family medicine residents from local educational institutions.
Expected Hours
  • Full-time commitment - 52 weeks with 6 weeks of vacation/CPD paid time.
  • Work schedule: Monday to Friday, 7.5 hours per day.
Qualifications
  • Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
  • Eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
  • Certificate of Added Competence in Palliative Care (CCFP-PC) or equivalent accredited training in Palliative Medicine.
  • Demonstrated experience in a shared care model across diverse care settings.
  • A strong interest in the palliative approach to care and capacity building with colleagues.
  • Opportunities for teaching and research are available.
