Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Intake Specialist to join our team at the University of Waterloo. As a key member of our mental health services team, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality support to students, staff, and faculty members.

Key Responsibilities
  • Complex Screening
    • Conduct thorough risk assessments and screenings to determine service needs and make appropriate recommendations and referrals.
    • De-escalate and counsel clients presenting with high levels of distress or at high risk.
    • Collaborate with clients to gather relevant information and identify risk and urgency for care.
    • Determine appropriate level of care and decide how soon clients need to be seen.
    • Inform clients of on and off-campus resources and make referrals to other campus services.
  • Crisis Triage, Referrals, and Outreach
    • Identify clients at risk and refer them to crisis appointments as needed.
    • Maintain good working relationships with referral sources and provide consultation to stakeholders regarding student safety concerns.
    • Liaise with insurance providers to facilitate students' access to community services.
  • Clinical Case Load Monitoring
    • Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to ensure optimal client care.
    • Determine level of urgency for clients and assign them to teams based on clinicians' skill set and availability.
  • Training and Supervision
    • Train and supervise Bachelor's level residents and interns from mental health care programs.
    • Provide in-depth training on intake procedures, forms, computer programs, risk assessments, and referral processes.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work or equivalent in a comparable field.
  • Licensed or eligible to be licensed with a regulated mental health profession in the Province of Ontario.
  • 2-5 years' experience working in the mental health and/or student development field.
  • Progressive clinical and administrative experience in a student-focused post-secondary environment.
  • Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the lived experiences of equity-seeking individuals and groups.
