Your role will be essential in equipping trainees with the necessary skills and support to thrive in the workforce.

About the Role

The Employment Counsellor will collaborate closely with the Employment Services Coordinator to assist trainees through comprehensive intake assessments and personalized case management. You will lead workshops focused on life skills, mental health, disabilities, and addiction recovery, providing coaching and support to youth and adults who encounter significant employment barriers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough intake assessments that consider mental health, disabilities, and potential support needs for trainees.
  • Create tailored action plans and offer continuous case management throughout the program.
  • Provide emotional and practical guidance to trainees, helping them navigate barriers to success.
  • Advocate for trainees to ensure they access appropriate resources and services.
  • Facilitate connections with additional support services that enhance the overall wellbeing of trainees.
  • Educate employers on the advantages and strategies of hiring program participants.
  • Lead workshops and support groups focused on mental health, disabilities, and addiction in relation to employment.
  • Monitor trainee progress and conduct follow-up assessments with a focus on mental health and disability considerations.
  • Implement individualized accommodation strategies to foster a barrier-free work environment.
  • Maintain communication with employers during trainee employment and report outcomes to management.
  • Collaborate with the Employment Services Manager to gather and analyze job placement data, preparing relevant reports.
  • Engage with employers to promote the hiring of individuals with disabilities through recruitment events and educational initiatives.
  • Represent Employment Services in orientations and meetings with community partners and employers.

Qualifications

Education: Completion of a relevant post-secondary program in human services or a related field (Bachelor's degree or College Diploma in Career Counselling, Social Work, or Human Resources).

Experience: A minimum of 2-4 years of progressively responsible experience in job development, human services, or a closely related field.

Certifications: Mental Health First Aid, Job Development, Motivational Interviewing, and Career Development certifications are considered assets.

Skills and Abilities: Proficiency in English communication, sensitivity to diverse populations, familiarity with disability legislation, and knowledge of modern office practices and technologies.

Requirements: A Vulnerable Sector Check, valid Ontario Driver's licence, and completion of an Employment Medical Form.

Physical Demands: This role primarily involves working in an office setting, with a standard Monday to Friday schedule, though occasional evening or weekend work may be necessary.
