Position Overview

Under the guidance of the Capital Works Supervisor, the selected candidate will be tasked with the upkeep of contracted infrastructure assets, including bridges, culverts, roadways, signage, guardrails, and vegetation, adhering to the standards and specifications outlined in the contract.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Conduct repairs and maintenance on highways, roads, and bridges to ensure safety and optimal conditions for vehicular traffic, utilizing heavy machinery and various hand or power tools.
  2. Implement traffic control measures in compliance with OTM Book 7.
  3. Operate heavy machinery, including but not limited to traffic control equipment, vacuum trucks, boom trucks, bucket trucks, dump trucks, excavators, and loaders.
  4. Engage in work involving concrete, asphalt, and steel, which includes welding, cutting, and forming tasks.
  5. Maintain accurate records of work completed and materials utilized.
  6. Be prepared for emergency repairs related to rail, end treatments, fencing, and other urgent tasks, including participation in emergency response rotations as necessary.
  7. Comfortably work at heights using bucket trucks, scaffolding, and aerial lifts.
  8. Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Capital Works Foreman.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  1. Proficient in the operation of company and rental tools and equipment.
  2. Effective communication skills.
  3. Basic mathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  4. Ability to interpret various forms of instructions, whether written, oral, or diagrammatic.
  5. Strong safety awareness and perceptive abilities.
  6. Capability to identify hazards in both routine and non-routine tasks and take necessary precautions to prevent accidents.
  7. Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and subcontractors, and to follow safety instructions accurately.
  8. Willingness to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required for the role.

Education and Experience Requirements

  1. A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in bridge and road construction and maintenance is preferred.
  2. A valid G driver's license with a clean driving record is required; a DZ license is preferred.
  3. Possession of a valid Ontario Class DZ license is advantageous.
  4. Completion of training in traffic control methods, first aid, transportation of dangerous goods, WHMIS, and other relevant Occupational Health topics is required.

Physical Requirements

  1. The role requires regular standing, sitting, walking on various surfaces, and using hands for handling tools and equipment. Candidates must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and work in confined spaces.

Work Environment

  1. Fieldwork is a significant component of this position.

  1. Employees may be exposed to various weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, and may encounter wet or humid environments, high places, and airborne particles. Occasional exposure to hazardous chemicals and moderate to high noise levels may also occur.
